This entire situation is far beyond bullshit it's not even funny.

Sad thing is that you guys don't know the half of it and I don't think I could do the whole story justice by just typing a recap here.

Some of us know and still think it is bullshit.

It is awesome to hear the state legislature is willing to stand up and do something

about it. Something you never saw with the U of I and the Chief. At least in ND the name

is relative to the population around it. My wife's family (Sioux) are frustrated beyond

belief.

Bullshit is really the best way to address the situation and you can point the finger

right at the NCAA and to a lesser version a finite number of Sioux.

See that's were most people don't understand. Most of the Sioux people love the nickname because it gives them an identity that people recognize, without it many people would forget about them. The people with the problems are those liberal politically correct morons who care too much about peoples feelings to see a deeper meaning in anything.

As being of Indian heritage.....I find it offensive that they want to get rid of the name

More twists and turns in the never ending saga of the Fighting Sioux nickname and moniker. North Dakota state legislature proposing bill to force the retention of the Sioux. Going to get some resistance however. Hopefully this last ditch effort works, and the true voices in this story can be heard.

Introduction

ND Attorney General on the bill

Reaction from Coaches and politicians

Actual Bills themselves if anyone is willing to bore themselves thoroughly: Draft 1 Draft 2 Draft 3

Well, again bringing back the issue that never dies. Very important update on the bills I posted about the nickname. The first two were thrown out. However today, February 21st 2011 is the first step at potentially correcting many of the wrongs done by the people involved in this situation because today the North Dakota House of Representatives voted 65-28 in favor of the third bill that was introduced which states University of North Dakota athletic teams shall be known as the Fighting Sioux. Neither UND nor the state Board of Higher Education may take action to discontinue the use of the nickname or logo.

The bill will now move onto the senate to be voted on where it will likely pass, and then on to the governor's desk for his signature. What remains to be seen is what the NCAA will do but regardless the people may still have their say on this issue.

That is awesome!

Shoots, thanks for your updates on this story! As you stated, let's see what the NCAA does or tries to do

with this change by the ND legislators. They can kiss off with their mightier then thou attitude and political

correctness BS. As in many situations, the intentions of the NCAA changes are noble in nature but ridiculous

when acted upon.

Well as the NCAA is not real legal entity per se, they have no rights/power to overturn the state ruling. I would imagine all they can do is enforce some sort of stupid sanctions, or try to kick them out of the NCAA, and I'm not sure that they could afford that black on when they are trying so hard to restore and preserve their pristine image of integrity and honor.

The NCAA can't really kick us out but they can make our athletic teams basically irrelevant. Although it is an extreme measure they can tell teams not to schedule us or even cancel programs altogether similar to what was done at Southern Methodist with their football team back in the 80's. They won't go that far though.

Realistically they will probably prohibit us from hosting NCAA sanctioned playoff home games. This isn't really a big deal because the hockey team would still be able to host their conference playoff games because the conference runs those and the NCAA uses neutral sites to host hockey playoffs. The men's and women's basketball teams also would play at neutral sites. Football is the only one effected here and quite frankly, nobody gives a shit about our football program. Keep in mind here that all sports other than hockey are ineligible for playoffs for another 2 years because we just moved those sports Division 1 back in 2008 so that playoff sanction wouldn't be much of a punishment.

My guess is that if this passes the NCAA, who is under different leadership since the whole Native American imagery debacle started, is going to just see this as a way to close the book on this topic. One tribe voted in favor. The bills would be an indirect way of the other tribe voting. Besides if they reject the name they'll be breaking the law and they don't want that kind of press from the media.

Yeah no way they would pull and SMU "Death Penalty"... I was thinking more along the lines of restricting a scholarship for every year that they keep the name, or something dumb like that. But I agree with what you say, not a big deal to the other sports. What is encouraging is like you said, this used to be a big issue, and now you aren't hearing anything about it in the media. This is a good thing to me because the less that is out there nationally the more the NCAA can get away with not enforcing. Hopefully all this slides through without a hitch and the NCAA will just leave it alone. They may have even issued a self-imposed media blackout on this if I were them. The fact is no matter what happens if it becomes a story again it's bad for the NCAA. If they win and it's a story, they are the bad guys again. If they lose and it's a story, they are the bad guys again for making all the other teams like Illinois change. It would also again bring up the Fighting Irish no doubt, at a time when (hysterically to me under poor circumstances) more bad media attention is exactly what they don't need.

Best case scenario for everyone. This goes away quickly and quietly.

That would be cool, I would love a football game to integrate the two levels better. instead of NCAA doing recruiting and NFL/NHL doing a draft. I want to be able to draft kids that I recruited.

It can be EA Sports Hockey.

Then down the road they can have pond hockey tournys.

Another HUGE day in correcting the injustice done by the folks that control the universities in North Dakota. The North Dakota senate has passed the bill that was earlier passed by the house, meaning once the governor signs the bill the University of North Dakota by law must call themselves the Fighting Sioux. Definitely going to get some oppositions from those liberal asshats but it's a gigantic step in keeping one of the best nicknames and logos out there.

Final step in this bill is done, Governor Jack Dalrymple has signed the bill and it will go into state law on August 1st. Now we wait and see what the NCAA says. Either way I am very very proud of the people that helped make this happen, making sure that democracy is served and we don't succumb to a small minority's opinion. Glad I could do my part in signing petitions, and writing letters to my representatives, just hope it wasn't all for nothing. It would be really cool to see this school 30 years down the road with the same name and to be able to say I helped save it, even if it was just a small part.
