My favorite teams
I may have mentioned this before...but here it goes again:
The Czechs and Slovaks have always been separate people--Their language is different and their ancestry is different--it was different back in the Austrio-Hungarian empire (Medeival through WWI), it was different in the 1st Czechoslovak republic (Between WWI and WWII), is was different when the Czech portion was under Nazi rule and the 1st Slovak republic was a Nazi pupet state (WWII), it was different in the 2nd Czechoslovak Republic (Cold-war Era), and is different now. Slovaks are Slovaks. Czechs are generally divided into 2 ethnic groups: Bohemians from the west of the Czech republic, and the Moravians from the East Czech republic, even though they share a common language with each other.
Calling Hossa and Frolik countrymen would be like calling Steve Irwin and Celine Dion (singer or Leafs D-man) countrymen because at one time their ancestors were both part of the British Empire.
And belive you me...Slovaks hate being called Czechs. My dad made that mistake with my fiancee once...
...once.
