On to my next point:

That thread resorted to name calling because fluffy made a really stupid and personal attack on many members of the boards. He insulted the military, which many of us served in. That is grounds for a simple talking to, followed by a threat, followed by a smack upside the head and maybe worse in the real world. I don't know why you want to defend that Jim. We asked him to explain himself, some of us even agreed PARTIALLY with what he had to say. I WAS ONE OF THEM. But he clearly crossed the line and stirred up shit knowing the only reciprocity any of us had was to BAN him. I can't understand Jim, why you don't agree with the 'voting off the island' concept. If dozens of people express outrage over one poster, then get rid of the bad apple. Don't be a ****** and buck the entire rest of the community and you should have no fear of getting booted.

As far as some of us having strong personalities and not letting go of an argument:

How am I to know if you don't get or agree with what I am trying to say if you don't say so. Here is a simple modification we can all make, start a response by saying I don't agree with you and here is why... Also, don't continue to lurk in a thread and repeat the same thing over and over without every trying to add something to your point. It is fruitless and ends up being "I know you are but what am I".

Some of these threads are arguments. I don't understand why we suddenly can't argue. It is an exercise of our intellects to do so. Even if it occassionally resorts to name calling. A thread where 15 people agree on the same thing is FUCKING BORING and will cause me to go elsewhere faster than someone calling me a name. Shit, I thought we were hockey fans here, not ballet fans...****...

I think that military thing was actually me, unless it was some other thread. It sounds almost exactly the same as I remember specifically talking about it with you and Bubble but not Fluff, so I'm not sure if that was the reason he was banned.

Jims an idiot but I'd still go out of my way to help him if he needed it. Least I would have, before he insinuated I was doing shit or responsible for shit I wasn't.

I mean I've seen him at almost his worst and best at the same time. Getting kicked out of the Scotts Trade while his daughter was giving 18000 people the finger.... ****....

Just kidding.....

... only not????

I've heard of the epic Jim story... didn't know there was any finger waving/IQ showing to the St. Lunatics in attendance.

Many of us were there. We have pictures.

Walking out into the concorse after Havlat won the game in OT, just to see Puck Jim and Daughter peering throught the glass window watching the game on TV. From OUTSIDE the building!!!! Priceless!

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
In late, but my $.02, and yes, I have ran, and moderated forums online before with about the same number of members (non-hockey related, though).

A troll is someone that posts something purely for the sake of riling people up. The definition is no more vague than that of "obscenity" it's hard to define but you know it when you see it.

But as for this site, I come here because it seems to be about the most level-headed when it comes to hockey/blackhawks knowledge. It seems the people here tend to know a lot, and aren't as reactionary as the O-boards and tend to be a lot less uptight. Further, the knowledge seems second to none. While people may have their whipping boys and their man-crushes for players and whatnot, very rarely does someone make a post, especially about hockey knowledge that is just so far out there that you wonder if they know the difference between a stick check and a cashier's check. The O-boards, on the other hand, it's hard to find good knowledge amongst a lit of the ramblings there--especially when it seems that those running the board seem to have their mouths firmly affixed to McDonough's tallywhacker.

The main downside of this board is that it does have almost an exclusive format to it--where if you're not part of the group you do feel like an outsider. It makes sense, though, in that most of the people here are in Chicagoland, go to the games together and the road games together, whereas some, like me, could never do that since I live about 300 miles from the nearest NHL city. But that being said, I've never felt unwelcome here even if someone did try to jump down my throat for something I posted.

I have not seen any major mod problem, and yeah, much like being a referee, you are going to catch shit mo matter what you do. You're never going to make anyone happy, and in IHN's defense, Not a single mod here has ever came of with the attitude of "I'm going to delete your post because I can", or "I'm going to ban you just because I can.". This place I think has been pretty even-handed. I mean, yeah, if you're going to post something, you're likely going to catch crap for it so try to back it up with something other than babbling. This *is* the internet, after all. But still, I think of all the Blackhawks boards, this has to be one of the best.

This thread has been a perfect reminder of why I don't post anymore........Thanks! We have a "Mod" saying "if you don't like it, find another board" and we have another "Mod" saying that "people take things too personal". Well, they are both absolutely correct. After being told to "just die already" while in the middle of chemo and radiation, and having my daughter hit on in a chat right in front of me while a "Mod" was present, I came to the conclusion that after 3 warnings, you all could take a flying leap......especially after seeing posts 125-127. You're going to bring a guys daughter into this?....Really? So yeah, I guess I take things a little too personal.....I apologize for that.

I think a big reason why this places goes to hell at times it's because people take things too personal sometimes, and they let things carry over into other threads. I really wish that people would leave their opinion about other people in the thread they argued with him. No one is going to agree with everyone on everything. So disagree in a thread with them, but don't drag feelings about someone into a different thread. It's ok to agree with people you don't like, it doesn't make you a more horrible person.

Also, to go along with that, people need to explore and enjoy the whole site. Take time out from sticking to one forum or one thread. Visit all the forums, get to know people through other topics. Find something you have in common with someone in one thread and you'll be more likely to be less attacking on them in a different thread. At to this end, find something you are passionate about and don't be afraid to start threads. We don't need thousands of threads, but it seems like the majority of them are started by the same people and that's what ends up spiraling into the same conversations. FYE , other sports forums have really great threads in them, but people stick to the hawks and to NHTA, and all that ends up doing is pigeonholing a person into their obnoxious hawk beliefs or outrageous political and religious beliefs.

The one thing that is going to make everything here better, is if everyone becomes a more active if the entire community. In all the different forums. Become know for something, evolve the culture yourself. Be known for a book thread, be known for starting the GDTs, be know for whatever floats your boat, just contribute and everyone will be happier around here and things won't seem so dominated by the same people.

That's a very salient point Mass and you know I am totally down with bopping all over the damn forum! Along with chat I firmly believe it's lead to me getting to cyber know and joke with posters and perhaps even developing a good rapport with some folks in general that I fully admit probably just wouldn't happen if I was only posting in hockey threads.

I can understand Tbird's stance. I get why is a bit angry.

BTW, saw an ad for the new Stratovarious album. NICE!

So, perhaps here are some changes to the rules that can be enacted.

1. Back up your argument. Go ahead and say Seabrook sucks, but follow that up with a reason. Stats related. If he fucked your girlfriend or gave your uncle a brown bagpipe, yeah sure, you'll be mad, but that isn't the reason we are here. We are here to talk about hockey. In Hawktalk, about the Hawks in general. In NHL/hockey talk, about hockey in general. In NHTA, whatever we want.

2. If someone disagrees with you, let 'em. It ain't gonna hurt you. Provides stats in response.

3. Let other fans be fans. I noticed that fans of other teams who may have some good knowledge and insight, are run out of here. It's a shame. A while ago there was a poster named HolmstromScreens. That poster was a great hockey mind, but because they were a Detroit fan, was just run right the **** outta here. I want more hockey acumen, as that's how I learned a lot about this game. Why would anyone not want to learn all they could about hockey? That baffles me.

4. NHTA is a great place. You really get a good feel for people there. Their sense of humor, their beliefs, and so on. It is a great mingling place. That's where most of us got to know each other on the O boards. Hell, and here.

You know what's great about all this bitching and complaining? It is gonna make us stronger in the long run. I don't care if there are people going back to the O boards and saying we are fighting. Know why? Cause this shit would fly on there. That's what makes this place so great. What I am hearing from everyone, like PJ, maryo, eruns and such is that they like this place, and want it to be around and to be a great place to go. And invite others. What's wrong with that?

This is why this forum is great. It's what makes this the best message board imo about hockey.

See Charlie, there are alot more people that I miss than people I have a problem with on here. The "problem" is actually me. I've never had alot of patience to begin with but now, it's pretty much gone. Since I got "sick", my perception on alot of things has changed. Quite a few things that were "important" to me are now taking a back seat and quite frankly I don't give two shits about others. So don't take what I said up there too personal (lol), I miss some of you guys and gals more than you know.

Since one of those complaints is directed at me I will address it. I was well aware you were present in the chat and I was being silly, it was not meant to be serious in the least bit, I thought you would take it in jest. If I knew it would have angered you I never would have done it. So I apologize.

and for anyone else I victimized, know that I am 100% kidding/joking, I am not being serious in the least.

Agreed Jako! I get that there are a lot of disgruntled members with legitimate complaints, I get that IHN has lost some terribly good members that they will likely never get back but I also believe that all the shitty behavior is outweighed by some pretty great behavior and camaraderie when one takes an overview of the broader IHN Forum and community. It isn't anything close to 100% clusterfuckery over here IMO---as exhibited when Tommy's baby was born so sick, or when ParickSharpRules good friend passed away in that sudden accident, or when RK found out about his old friend passing away. There's "good people" here by and large IMO. The reactions and support could NEVER happen on the O-Boards because well, it's the O-Boards and they are what one expects with 10s of thousands of members. It couldn't happen on Secondcityhockey because yay though they have absolutely the BEST, funniest, and sanest Hawks GD threads ever they don't actually have a forum--technically just comments to blog entries. It couldn't happen at the 300Level because though they have many posters there with a fount of invaluable hockey knowledge it all gets lost in the overwhelming "OWNING" or "fixing for accuracy" tenor of every post. And well the Hawks board over at HFBoards is just tragic so. . .

Sorry Tim, none of that was directed at you. The ONLY problem I've ever had with you was pissing or spitting in peoples food or drink or whatever the hell it was.

She was there? I didn't bring her in the conversation in a bad light. Just part of the story. I said absolutely nothing wrong and in most instance would rather hang out with her than her father. So don't use that as an example of someone hitting on your daughter. Who by the way can take care of herself I'm quite sure.

But your post explains why some come and some don't. And like I said it's no different anywhere else. Not everyone on the Island always gets along.

Ok so it wasnt me then, whew? (I dont specifically ever remember doing it to your daughter, but since I have "gotten fresh" , in jest, with 90% of this boards female members, I assumed it was me).
