I get it Spartan. I am not doubting the results you report, or other people's results. I am only interjecting that the long term effects of a keto diet may be different than the short term, and may introduce other problems while alleviating present ones.

I was the same. Stiff and crickety in the morning, until I moved around a bit and loosened up, then fine. But after 25 years being diagnosed with AS, I am suspecting I was incorrectly diagnosed. They only went from an X-Ray and a a gene test. I have the indicator gene, and my sacroiliac joint was a bit wonky in X-Rays. Since stopping weights, adjusting diet a bit, and shedding the 20 or so pounds, I have not had a flare up for over 20 years.. I even went the cannabis route, but I'm not one to call it a panacea. I still enjoy it a bit, but even that has recently gone to being just an occasional treat on a late night, and no ill effects without it.

I think feeling healthy induces better health, and even placebos have their place.

The Atkins diet has been around for several decades and was born of the Keto diet before people knew what Keto was. Doctors actually came up with the Keto diet 100 years ago to heal people with epilepsy.

When fasting for a longer period of time, the body goes into autop.hagy, a process in which it basically heals itself. The Keto diet was created to mimic the fasted state and was used as a medical treatment before it was ever used as a diet intended to lose weight.

There is zero scientific evidence to support this statement at the current time.

But good to know that in Spartan's mind IF=Wolverine people.

Eat it, then puke it up.

BONUS: you get to taste the cake twice.

Want the study citations?

And calorie in vs calorie out is base level science for weight loss. If you can disprove it you've disproved a core tenant of science in the known universe. So please cite your work and go get your Nobel Prize.

I'm out of touch with my body? I'm a competitive distance runner and have been for the last 16 years and have my own trainer and dietitian. I've maintained consistent training, power, and race season weights for the last decade. If you do I F or Keto, cool. But it's not magic. It's pretty basic. it's just different variations of a calorie cut. Spartan himself said he only east 2k-3k calories a day. Plus exercise. No shit he's losing weight.

My offseason calorie intake is roughly 1900-2000 calories a day(IIRC this offseason it's 1960 calories). I'm a lot more lift heavy this time of year so I'm not taking in more calories than I would during my more intense training periods when my running is a higher volume/intensity. I'll peak during the summer around 2800 calories a day, maybe 3400 on really intense tempo days but I'm also mixing in different macros etc based on what my body is needing to heal on a daily basis.

I think what is going on with people that treat these special diets as sanctuary is mostly psychological in nature. If they want to think that "they are doing the best possible thing" to lose weight and it keeps them motivated, then I am not going to knock them. In the end, they stay motivated which keeps them in the calorie deficit, which helps them keep losing weight.

Unfortunately, from what I have seen, is that relapse on very low carb diets causes significant weight gain faster than a relapse on a regular cut of balanced nutrition. That's why it's so important for people to be able to look at the diet as a lifestyle that you can stick to basically forever.

Whoa now, FT. That is ignorance at its highest level. No less than 3 men have been awarded Nobel prizes for their study and findings in autoph.agy. It was first discovered in the 60s and the study has been ongoing ever since with the most recent winner of the Nobel prize for his study in autopha.gy being Yoshinori Ohsumi in 2016.

It is scientifically known to be a natural occurring regeneration process. There is no doubt that it occurs and there is no doubt about the manner in which it heals the body. We basically could not survive long without it. Waaaaaaaay more research needed on your part.

After you eat that cake, fast for 24 hours before eating the next cake and repeat the process over and over and over again.

I think what is happening is you people can’t think for yourselves and prefer to take the lazy way out and listen to the talking heads even when they’ve been proven wrong. You follow the standard American diet even though it has been shown to be one of the worst diets in the world. For 100 years, you’ve followed the calorie in/calorie out bullshit even while obesity became epidemic. More than 70% of Americans are overweight or obese living by these stupid standards. If any of this conventional wisdom you all adhere to was the least bit true, there would be a lot less fat fucks in America.

Every culture in the world has carbs as a centerpiece of its diet though. Bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, etc.

Why are so many of them far less fat than we are? I suspect it's likely because they don't eat as much sugar and processed food.

My wife has a shellfish allergy, and I've often wondered if we went on vacation to the Mediterranean if her having mussels there would affect her like it would here.

Dude, most people are overweight or obese because they can't follow ANY diet. Just look around at what people are eating in public everyday!

Calorie in / calorie out is scientifically proven. It is not a hypothesis or a theory. It is the LAW of Thermodynamics. You even said yourself that people on these diets screw up their metabolisms (which is wrong BTW if you do it correctly). The thing though is that your own statement is AGREEING with the calories in / calories out because when you slow your metabolism you burn less calories. When you burn less calories, you have to eat less to stay out of a calorie surplus.

Even if you are eating more on IF and Keto and losing weight, all that proves is your metabolism is more efficient at burning the calories. You still are in a calorie deficit.

Most are also high in fat, the good fat and not the heavily processed fats. They also eat both smaller portions and less frequently while avoiding junk food and sugary drinks.

Yup. Ever been to Japan? People literally eat a bowl of rice with every meal. Not just every day. Japan has THE LOWEST obesity rate for any developed country in the world. What is happening is most people in Japan are A) ectomorphs or mesomoprhs and B) they eat almost no processed foods. They eat fresh fruit for desert. Oh and they don't eat sushi rolls filled with cream cheese and garbage. They eat sashimi and nagiri.

Not kidding when I say this. I would take a trip to say Boston first to see if her allergies act up. Some people can't even smell it without flare ups.

The average American eats over 200 lbs of meat per year. The average Japanese eats about 80 lbs of meat per year. Of course lifestyles are different also, exercise, etc. And for the Japanese, food is a pleasure and a joy, not a task.

The pendulum swings hard here when it comes to food. I still think balance, moderation, variety, and enjoyment are the keys to healthy eating.

It's almost as if all those foods have a lot of calories or something.
