You seem defensive. I just asked him where he got it from. Spartan gonna Spartan
Well, oletard, allow me to inform how keto found its way back into the mainstream in modern times after being invented some 100 years ago. In the mid 1990s The parents of a 5 year old boy, who suffered daily seizures, grew desperate after their boy's health continued to deteriorate with medical care. They then did some research and found the keto diet had shown success treating the seizures. They then found a hospital in NJ that did use this as a treatment for epilepsy. After taking the boy to this place, he seemed to start getting better within mere days. Don't remember how long he stayed but as I recall, it was advised to stay on the diet for about 3 years to make sure the seizures didn't return. Their story was then told in an episode of 20/20 and then in a movie titled "First do no harm".

You mean a pound of bacon topped with ranch isn't good for you?

Imagine listening to "traditional" thinking when obesity has increased every year for half a century.

yes it is. Eat less calories than your body needs, you lose weight. That simple.

This takes into account one half of the equation.

"what your body NEEDS" is the fallacy.

Low carb diets consider that WHAT you eat determines how fast your metabolism burns calories. "what you need" changes based on intake. All that needs to be considered.

I dont lift anymore because stength is not my issue. Need to cut. But, I would assume if you work out during the period where you are taking in you calories. You should be fine. You would probably need to get a semi regular schedule of eating and lifting.

Keto and Intermittent Fasting

Lol the Atkins diet is back again?

The Atkins diet was based on the Keto diet. It just allowed a few more carbs and fruit here and there with the thinking being it would be good for losing weight if you’re not treating a particular health condition.

The reason we see Keto combined with Intermittent fasting is because both attempt to accomplish the same thing or , more accurately, Keto attempts to mimic the fasted state.

Fasting has been used throughout history to heal from different illness. Nobody knew quite why it worked so well until autoph.agy was discovered. It is a process in which the body heals itself by repairing/eliminating broken cells and proteins.

Sugar not only is bad for our bodies but as long as people eat and/or drink it throughout the day, the body will never have the chance to heal itself and, as far as weight loss goes, as long as insulin is constantly being spiked by all the carbs and sugary drinks throughout the day, your body will never resort to using your stored fat.

What Keto does, in essence, is keep the insulin level closer to baseline and train the body to use fat as its fuel rather than sugar. Once the body is fat adapted in this way, it has no qualms about using stored fat throughout the day so one can be burning fat, even without exercise, virtually every day between meals. By instituting IF with Keto, you give yourself both more time to burn fat and more time for your body to heal itself.

I am going to give this 16/8 IF diet thing a chance starting next week. I usually workout in the AM (which is when I'm going to fast) so I might have to switch that up. Do you recommend starting out and doing it 7 days right off the bat or work your way into it?

I can tell you what I know... which is quite a lot as I’ve done all the research. As far as exercise and Keto goes, it is best to do cardio in a fasted state, shortly after you wake up and before you eat or drink anything other than water. Studies prove this to be true.

As far as lifting, even if doing IF, you can do the lifting in the same window of time you give to eating. If you stick with Keto and do not carb up, you will see a stronger initial burst but won’t be able to do as many reps and likely run out off energy sooner than if you do a bit more of a carb up prior to.

Some follow the philosophy of sticking to Keto and just doing heavier weights with fewer reps. Others allow for more carbs prior to and right after their lifting. Have also seen some swear by drinking a glass of beet juice 1-2 hours before lifting, saying it surpasses all other supplements and gives them their best workout.

When I fast I usually take primatine cause it has ephedra. I wanted to do a three week fast this month but can’t find any of that stuff anywhere. It’s either discontinued or everyone is fasting for New Years lol

i pretty much do this and it has worked for me

not going to lie the thought of drinking beet juice makes me pillow soft...i'd hold my nose and drink if it truly can replace pre-workouts

Been on keto since June 27th.
Was at 220+, done to 185 right before Christmas and back at 190 now after eating like a true Chicagoan over the break.
Keto works amazingly well, just have to make sure you have keto friendly snackable items around--pork rinds, cheese, broccoli, and cured meats. I also make a weekly allocation of fat bombs for the sweet tooth cravings. I've learned to eat a lot of food that I never did before and I feel ten times better. Working at Coke isn't easy as they shove sugar in your face all day but I get by with Stevia & an occasional diet Coke. I only lift but looking to get back into Cross Fit again since I have no motivation to do cardio on my own.
Wife started it the same time as me, was a size 10 and now is a size zero and is a Jazzercise instructor as of 3 weeks ago

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. DePaul Blue Demons
I was doing regularly cardio and calorie cutting for a long time and didn't see much progress. Last summer I started a high protein/low carb diet and I have lost 30 pounds. The low carb diet might not be for everyone but it worked for me.

Started Keto/IF in May. Did it more cause it seemed like a good way to cure a stomach I had and it did so quickly. Figured I could stand to lose 20 to 25 pounds too but it went far beyond that and with little effort.

I find I stay with a small select menu to make things easier. Basically consists of eggs, nearly any meat, spinach, broccoli and main snack being macadamia nuts. Like using ample amounts of butter on my veggies. Also throw some peanut butter in there, sometimes even with jelly w/reduced sugar. Have also found a sweet potato every now and then does no harm. Never was a soda drinker so not a problem for me. Usually drink water, sometimes with zip fizz, and also some Powerade Zero.

Have you tried Zevia? Seems like the go to of choice for peeps who were soda drinkers.

When I read this, to be honest, my first reaction was "35 pounds in 6 months +? That doesn't seem like as much as I would expect."

But then I see "feel ten times better" and realize the important part of that. Don't get me wrong, I think 35 pounds is great. My niece's husband has lost 50 so I am setting the bar high, unfairly.

Congrats on the loss. I am trying to get started now - not sure if I want to do just low carb or try the Keto.

I have had success with low carb before, but eating out and drinking every night when traveling extensively for work this past year has led to a lot of additional pounds.

Great info here by many, especially Spartan.

Thanks to all and good luck to those trying this - myself included.

Jewels to get a case of Squirt
Lost about 17 lbs in 2 months on keto. IF doesn't work with me, just can't go that long without eating as I get kinda shaky. Back on keto now after the holidays, looking to do another 2 months and see where I'm at.

There are a few downsides for me. My output in both strength training and cardio declines a bit on keto, especially in the first couple weeks. I also got some pretty bad heart palpitations (which I get anyway sometimes) at the outset but I figured out it was loss of electrolytes - took some pedialyte and it went away. The boredom gets to me too. So much has carbs, it limits the choices in eating out a bunch and I get sick of two dozens eggs a week and no bread or pasta or beer. But you can have liquor which helps.

Hard to argue with the results though. And no matter how well I do on the diet I have a much better understanding or just how much carbs are part of everything and how many useless calories are in high carb foods.
