I would have been 3 years old during the 1985 season

I was 28, I would have kicked your ass. No really I would have found you and kicked your ass.

D in this order:
1. Dent
2. Hampton
3. Singletary
4. Wilson
5. McMichael
6. Marshall
7. Fencik

Whole team in this order:
1. Payton, he allowed the crazy, kept it loose. The GOAT football player.
2. McMahon, when healthy. The Bears even with that D, couldn't win shit without him.
3. Dent, when he felt like it.
4. Hampton, never won a thing without him.
5. Singletary, a great Aussie once said "QB of the defense".
6. Jimbo Covert, come on HOF.
7. Wilson
8. McMichael
9. Marshall
10. Fencik

I don't know how many other ways I can say this: I was three. I'm just gathering opinions because I thought it was an interesting topic.

Steve Nash won back to back MVP awards.

And Nash was the best player in those 2 years.

Anyway, back to your question. Where would you rank Singletary of the 11 defensive starters on the '85 team and where on the entire team(not sure if it was a 53 man roster in 85). So using some logic, if Singletary was the best defensive player of the ENTIRE NFL in 1985, it stands that he was the best defensive player on the 1985 Bears. Is this really that difficult?

I don't know any other way to put this, I was kidding. Back in 1985 when I was 28 I did not hunt down 3 year old kids and kick their asses. I honestly didn't think I would have to explain this to you.

I'll chalk this one up to a bad night for you.

My list is 100% serious. Singletary and Fridge were the media poster boys for that team, the 'eye shot' became a thing. Singletary was overrated but great.

I'll bet you kicked at least one three year old in 85. Just one.

He also won it in 88. It's hard enough to get it once. I think the best player on that D was Hampton though.

As much as I like Singletary, he was the product of a huge hype machine by the NFL and John Maddon. Maddon wouldnt stop talking about him and the "Singletary eyes" on every Bears broadcast and even games that didnt involve the Bears. The NFL used his picture and video as lead ins and promos to games. I was 30 that year and a hard core fan as were all my buddies. We all liked Singletary but none of us thought he was the best player. That goes to Hampton as the 46 was built around him

Another comparison. In 1985 Singletary had 1 interception and only 7 in his entire career. In comparison Butkus had 35 interceptions. The reason is that Butkus was in coverage, he was backing the line and blitzing the QB. That fucker was everywhere on the worst team in the NFL

Singletary only had 1 interception because he was a downhill LB who's job was to fill gaps and run the sidelines. He wasnt in coverage nor was he good at it

Curious to know five 85 Bears he ranks ahead of Singletary . . . Hampton, McMichael, Perry, Fencik, Wilson? Singletary was more consistent and important to the defense than all of them. Lawrence Holmes is an everlasting tool . . .

W.Marshall and R.Dent would be in there for sure i'd think.

As someone old enough to recall

Hampton
Dent
McMichael
Frazier
Singletary-Wilson-Marshall (with Wilbur as my fav)

Don't forget to put Ron Rivera with the LBers.

I wonder if Urlacher, Briggs or Mike Brown (in their prime) would have started for the '85 Bears?

Urlacher yes
Briggs no
Brown maybe....probably better fs than fencik in the pass game but different time back then and fencik did his job well, layer people out.

For the defense thr bears ran in 85 , urlacher would have replaced singletary
No, the 85 Bears in the 46 defense requires a downhill LB and that's perfect for Singletary. Urlacher has never been a downhill LB. He is a sideline to sideline and drop back LB

Totally have to agree. Singletary was an important part of the '85 Defense but not top 4. I'd put his contributions around the 5 or 6 mark. But his "eyes" made him one bad MOFO.

I was probably most of your current ages back then so I recall vividly. Unbelievable amount of talent on that defense.

Hampton
Dent
Marshall
Wilson
maybe Frazier
then Mike
