When did he say it? Was it after the 84 season? Maybe he thought he would be the best in 85 but other guys were more dominant than expected.

Would be pretty odd for Bell to be the best player on the defense and they saw no drop off in play without him on the team.

Although it hardly seemed so at the time, the holdouts of Bell & Harris undoubtedly benefited the 85 team. There can be no question that having Marshall on the field in place of Harris strengthened the defense. Harris was decent, but Marshall was a heat-seeking-missile on that defense. Ryan was notorious for playing veterans, and Harris's holdout forced him to play Marshall 100% of the time. With Bell, its a little less clear, but Duerson was clearly a much superior cover guy and that's what that defense needed more. It didn't need an in-the-box SS. No one ran on that defense (in large part because of Singletary...); they didn't need a safety in the box to shut other team's run games down. Hell, Duerson ended up in the Pro Bowl that year, and Bell couldn't beat Duerson out when he did return in '86. Todd Bell will always live on in Bears lore simply because of one play. In the '84 playoff game, he just about killed Joe Washington and forced the fumble that started the Bears toward their Super Bowl. The '85 Bears have been pretty unanimous about that play being the seed of their Super Bowl season. But Todd Bell being one of the top 2-3 players on that defense? Umhhh, no; no way...

Ryan said he was the Defensive MVP of the Bears in 1984....

Bell's replacement ended up making the PB in 1985 just as Bell had in 1984. So I guess Duerson was the best player on the 1985 unit?

Read the articles in the 2 links I provided. One also says that Bell was considered by the MVP voters as defensive MVP in 1984

Buddy Ryan said Bell was the best and you guys want to argue with him

I was 24 in 1985. I rate them this way:

Dent
Singletary
Hampton
Marshall
Fencik

Stupid ass Todd Bell and Al Harris. Man did they fuck up by playing hard ball and sitting out that season. Dave Duerson did a nice job replacing Harris and we were stacked at LB anyway so Harris was not missed.

defense operated through Singletary. it's widely noted that he was undersized for the position. he made the Pro Bowl 10 times, so it's not like he sucked, it's just the other guys around him were THAT good. he was an intelligent player. I have to view it through the lens of Gus though, I was only 3 at the time of the Super Bowl run.

there were some incredible athletes on that defense. I don't think it's meatball to admire how amazing they were still. it sucks that talent had to get squandered because McMahon got hurt so much. that should've been a 4 SB win dynasty.

Their defense was even more fun to watch the year before. Does anyone remember that Oakland game when they kept knocking the QB's out.

Both John Maddon (Raider coach) and Ditka said it was the most violent game of their careers. I believe 7 players were knocked out of the game

Still pisses me off they did not win multiple super bowls. Blame that on Ditka and Ryan.

Poor QB play whenever McMahon went down. If you're blaming Ryan, ok he left after the SB though. Ditka...can he be blamed for no good back up on the roster?

Letting Marshall get away didn't help either.
