Smith sold it. Toews said the zebras told him as much.

I'll buy that him taking 5 minutes 'to clear the cobwebs' was total bullshit and a waste of time. Any other player would have been taken to the lockerroom. But his initial flop to the ice, then clutching his head was instinctual, not acting.

I know everyone here really wants to stick up for Shawsie and I'll say upfront that if the goalie is out of the crease then he is fair game. But some of you are really taking this to the next level in regards to Smith's reaction to taking a shoulder to the head. While his reaction was VERY dramatic and may have been embellished, I know from playing that the last thing anyone is able to do in a split second WHILE being hit is consider "How can I ham this shit up?" This all happened very fast and a guy on ice skates getting spun around is not implausible. His initial reaction after hitting the ice could where he grabbed his face and writhed in pain could have been totally genuine. It fucking hurts to get punched in the face, now lets consider he got hit with a shoulder and more force than a punch and he was hunched over when it happened.

It isn't crazy to believe that he really got jacked in the face, had his head whipped back, his momentum carried him head over heels...and it freaked him out.

Now, why didn't Shaw choose discretion? He didn't think Smith was going to consume the whole fucking area behind the net, he's young, and he had every right to make contact with Smith. He also didn't think Smith was going to lean over like that. Shaw is a foot shorter than Smith, so if Mike hadn't bent over to shoot the puck, Andrew would not have been tall enough to make contact like that.

It would be total bullshit if Shawsie gets more than one game for this. Totally unfair if he gets one game, but understandable from Sham-a-ban at the same time.

Let's hope its nothing but a stern talking to and a 'don't do that shit again, kid."

The problem is he milked it for everything it was worth when he was only hurt, he wasn't injured. I don't think anyone would have an issue with him if he had acted like a normal person who got hurt. You get knocked down you take a few seconds to gather yourself and you start the process of getting up and you at least get on all fours or to your knees to show you are only hurt. If he was injured yeah stay down, hurt, get up.

All I am saying is that the initial call was going to be a minor.

I think the amount of time they gave Smith to get it together was excessive as well.

I missed it, my bad, or starting mine while you were in process

I would agree that it was excessive, they should have got him off the ice, get Laberra in there and if he was okay next whistle put him back in. Nothing wrong with a 2-3 minutes to get it together, I've had my bell rung a few times it does take a few minutes to shake it off.

Until he spun himself around by kicking off the boards I could have believed it was genuine, once he did that, it was all an act.

I agree. I said the same things when it happened. I am not totally against the misconduct though, since that was for the contact with the head. The refs should have been more consistent with that all year though, imho.

Smith did a great job placing himself in a dangerous position and if Shaw was a year older or a bit less impetuous, then there is a chance Shaw follows JR's after action advice and hits the wall instead of trying to skate through, past, or around Smith.

But the problem is it was incidental contact, I can forgive the refs due to speed of the game but man I wish they could review them on instant replay. I mean seriously given the time they gave for Mike Smith get up they could have reviewed it and made a decision. I think the penalty would have been much less severe.

One fatal flaw in your theory... he didn't touch his face at any time.

The major point of contact was the side of shaw's helmet to the side of smith's helmet. Why didn't Shaw go flailing to the ice? Why didn't his neck get broken?

Is this a valid question, or are you still in the mood to nitpick my comments?

I guess I should be happy that a mod (who is supposed to be above this behavior) didn't call me stupid...

The major point of contact was Shaw's shoulder to the side of Smith's face. Did his Shaw's helmet hit Smith's? A little bit. Nothing at all like the contact of his shoulder though, that's what was principle point of contact. If people can't at least agree on that, forget it.

I still have a real hard time believing it was Smith's face that hurt. He grabbed his effen nose after taking his mask off and checked his teeth! I've gotten rocked by a shoulder like that and the last thing I thought about was my nose and seeing if my teeth were there. Why? Cause I'm wearing a damn mask!

I think he milked every bit of it. But onto game three, hope they fire those pucks near his ears.

Seeing that the NHL wants Phoenix to win, I'm sure that above point by Variable will be moot.

Yes I'm sure the NHL would love to have, what would it be, Phoenix and Nashville match up in the next round? That would just do wonders for their ratings. 'Member how we were making fun of the Canucks message board for talking about how all the refs were out to get them and all the conspiracies of the NHL not wanting a Canadien team winning? 'Member that? Because I do.
