Zion National Park in Utah, incredible hiking there

I once spent a few days just hiking trails through the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. That was definitely non-stop postcard moments.

I drank so much in Key West, I don’t remember much of the scenery, but the drive from Miami to key west was awesome

The drive is cool. I used to boat there as well as Freeport, Bahamas.

Have you never driven down 55 from Chicago to St Louis?
yes, at least it has corn and beans growing during the summer. There is no time from when you get out of Denver until you get into Nebraska that there is much of anything other than a dispensary in a small town right near the Nebraska border.

Ohhh, the scenic route.

May of 1979 me and my girl friend are heading west from Chicago to go camping. I80 through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, we finally hit Colorado and girl friend says "where are the mountains?", really? The drive from Chicago to Denver is bleak.

Also horrible in a different way was Salt Lake City to Vegas in july with no AC.

Three hours further west. That is where Colorado starts in everyone's minds eye.

That is a brutal route. The only one I can think that tops it is try taking 80 across the entire state of Nebraska. Even with the 75 mph speed limit...it feels like a six month trip.

I have driven that many times and even going 85 I think the troopers "get" it. It seems like they are more active on the east bound traffic these days because of the flow of cannabis. Going west though, I've never run into trouble *knock on wood*.

When I wake up. She stuns me everyday. Something good to look at.

Live on a road with a river and woods full of deer and....

I'm shocked at the amount of Colorado responses. I've taken the I-70 route to Glenwood Springs three times already this year and I love it every time. For all of you Colorado lovers out there:

The Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of my favorites. It's way out in BFE in south central colorado. Closest major city is Alamosa. It's the largest sand dune range in North America...and it's badass. As you approach the park you think, "Pfft, this is it?" But once you park and make your way to the dunes you realize how perfectly beautiful it all is. It's like your in the middle of the Sahara desert. It's pure, perfect sand and every day the dunes are different due to the swift winds at 7,500 feet. You can hike and get lost in the dunes and it looks like it goes on for miles. Bring a sled or snowboard-you'll thank me later.

Then you turn around and you're staring at 13,000 foot peaks still covered with snow. It's truly remarkable. I take my family every year during the first week of June. The runoff from the mountains is strong and it creates waves of alpine water through the dunes. I bring rafts for my boys. You hike, then cool off in the river. It's one of the most amazing/stark contrasts I've ever seen.

Then, go hike Zapata falls, and check out the Alligator farm (if you have kids). Then, at the end of the day, travel 10 minutes to Hooper Hot Springs. That area of Colorado has it all and I truly love it. You can do a google image search, but it won't do it justice. You need to be swallowed up by that environment to truly understand it. But, I'm telling you...late May/Early June is the ONLY time to go to get the best experience.

Did I mention the UFO tower and endless starry skies?

LMFAO. That is exactly what my wife said after I talked her into to going there our first time. Now she wants to move there

Most of the plain states are very dull, but I liked driving through Kansas better because Kansas actually had some hills. Nebraska was nothing but flat soy bean field.

I know quite a few people who drive to Denver from IA for vacation all the time via I-80. I think they are crazy. I've done it once and never again. Easier to just fly. Best piece of advice that I have heard is to leave as the sun is setting and drive straight through Nebraska in the middle of the night.

Sorry...yes...corn.

Soy bean fields were my illustrious view from my motel window during my stay in Kearny, Nebraska. But that is a story for the polar opposite of this thread.

I can’t fly unless I’m extremely intoxicated

If I remember correctly, the end of the highway in Nebraska you start seeing some hills to the north especially.
