Since you brought money into it, Hossa is also overrated.

Under 60 points in the first two seasons here for a so called 'elite' talent.

Very true, Hossa is overrated. Just like Kane.

How about you answer the questions I posed about Kane instead of sidetracking your answer?

If you can get an answer like many of us have tried, I will  to you

I'm eventually going to have to work out what some of you guys mean when you use the term 'forechecking'.

I think you are probably talking about something other than that - but you know that is actually ok -but it is pretty damned confusing though -since it doesn't seem to match what I understand the term to be.

Generally teams go with one or two forecheckers most of the time unless having to make up a lot of goals in a given game -and then it is more like a desperation full court press thing.

One of those 2 is generally going to be the center.

Now what I have seen Kane do is hand up in the neutral zone and cherry pick when the Hawks are needing some Hail Mary type of offense.

Personally I don't see Kane putting up many more assists unless someone on the team develops into a full blown trigger guy (basically a sniper). 30 or so goals doesn't = a sniper- more like pushing 50 most season -so unless they got that sort of consistent type of guy putting the puck in the net -and on his line - you aren't probably going to see much more.

The guy does have the moves, that much is clear -but for my money, he has still mostly been a set up guy.

Personally I don't think that he's over-rated. He's probably rated about right.

But then again ... like I said before "over-rating" is actually about the person doing the rating - not the players.

Forechecking - Playing the puck or the body in your own offensive zone or the neutral zone when the opponent has the puck.

G, hey I respect your opinion on Kane & I can see why people find him overrated.

But I do find Hossa overrated for sure.

You find any other Hawk players besides Kane & Hossa overrated?

Just wondering.

If you find him nowhere overrated, yet keep posting about it, how about posting some support for him?

Why does he make as much as Toews?

Do you find him to be a good defensive player?

Is he good on the forecheck?

Is he enough of a playmaker (assists PLUS goals) to make up for the fact that he doesn't play defense or forecheck?

Why is he not overrated?

Answer the questions before you, before I answer any of yours.

Nope - it is about keeping the puck in the offensive zone (even when the other team has the puck) -the other stuff is all extra, but not specifically part of the larger term of forechecking.

As far as I can tell, it is difficult to keep 88 on the Chicago side if the redline -ever. It actually works for him (more often than you might think).

-> In other words, if you pick off a pass in the offensive zone -you were forechecking, even if it hits you in the rear.

Hossa is actually underrated in my opinion. People get on him because he doesn't light the lamp as often as everyone wants, or maybe just not as much as Datsyuk, but he does EVERYTHING else.

Hossa NEVER gets the puck taken from him. He steals a ton of pucks. He is a ferocious back-checker. He hits. He camps in front of the net when it matters. He's MURDER short-handed. He does a ton of things that don't show up on a stat sheet and for that reason, and the fact that he doesn't score a ton and people only look at points, I think he's UNDERrated.

exactly bob...hossa is NOT overrated.

he does so many things away from te puck and actually plays a 2 way game

again, just cause he doesnt score a point per game doesnt make him overrated

The problem is that a lot of people don't seperate terms...they lump them together. The terms "overrated" and "overpaid" are not the same. If these owners and GMs are crazy enough to put out that kind of cash, don't call the player "overrated" because he takes it. You can call him "overpaid"...I just call him "fortunate".

Is Hossa "overpaid"? Yeah, probably. Is he "overrated"? Nope, not unless you call a near point a game guy that plays both ends of the ice well...overrated.

Kessel, Bieksa, Wiz, Versteeg, and Luongo

I would like to see some responses on overrated how.
Naming names is fine, but what's the measuring stick? Salary, production, etc.

Phil Kessel? Good player on a bad team. I can see an argument of being overrated.

Bieksa overrated is a bit harsh.
Wiz? I can see the argument with the new salary. Decent shot on the blue line, but his +/- was from a bad Islanders team. I didn't shed a tear when he was traded to the Ducks, but he's serviceable.
Versteeg is an argument one could make.
Luongo? Overrated because he couldn't close game 7 or his 5-hole?

Good list. I'll add to it with both the Sedins, Burrows, Redden, DiPietro and it pains me to add his name as he was one of our "guys"...Soupy Campbell. :nana:

UPDATE After some brief deliberation I've decided to add the entire Vancouver Canuck franchise including GM, coach and fans to the list. Only exception being Kesler.

Sedins-- the arguments are being made, but they are in the top 15. Not so overrated. Get Bolland on a line to match up, and they become very overrated.
DiPietro I can only hope gets healthy to prove to us what he could be capable of. Any GM should learn that lesson.

Wiz, Ovie and Luongo, obviously.. a few others that were mentioned were good.

Kane is overrated.

Sorry if that hurts :p

Anyone that says Kane is overrated should never watch the game of hockey again.
Then again, some one also mentioned Campbell.
I think we saw what happened when Campbell returned to the 2010 playoffs. Without him, the Hawks don't win the cup.
Period.
You can hate on the salary all you want, the guy is still a very good D-man.

Kane is nearly a point/game producer. Not sure how his offense is overrated. His rookie year he was taking bad offensive zone PIMs, and his size hurt him as we was being checked off the puck.
The guy (no longer a kid) has put on some serious muscle in the off season. It will be very fun to watch him.

Luongo is overrated because

(1) he has a team in front of him that controls the puck in the offensive zone and he doesn't face a whole hell of a lot of shots. Niemi had the same advantage when he was with us. When you're facing 16-20 shots a night, and you know a half dozen of them are BS tries from past the blue line, it doesn't take much netminding to give up just one goal. His GAA is artificially low.

(2) On top of that, and probably more importantly, as soon as he gets jostled in the pipes, run into, or God forbid lets a cheap one by, he loses his shit and gives up 6.

(3) He's prone to having insane nights where he's a brick wall and stops everything that comes to the blue paint, but he also has nights where he looks the wrong way and lets peewee league bouncing pucks past.

He isn't consistent, he can't overcome adversity, he doesn't face a whole hell of a lot of shots, and when he's bad, he's AWFUL. At NO POINT does anyone on his team think, "oh well, it's just one goal and that guy is a mental fortress and we can ride him to the Cup." EVERYONE on his team and out in hockey land is waiting for the moment "Lou" lets in a cheapy and blows smooth ass up.

All that inconsistency and a salary that would be probably pay for all of Rockford for a year.

No thanks.
