The problem is that a lot of people don't seperate terms...they lump them together. The terms "overrated" and "overpaid" are not the same. If these owners and GMs are crazy enough to put out that kind of cash, don't call the player "overrated" because he takes it. You can call him "overpaid"...I just call him "fortunate".

Is Hossa "overpaid"? Yeah, probably. Is he "overrated"? Nope, not unless you call a near point a game guy that plays both ends of the ice well...overrated.

Is Hossa overpaid?
No.
Is he overrated? No.

When Ben Smith scored the winner in game 6, who kept the puck in the zone beautifully? Hossa went to 3 cup finals in a row. His body was done by year 3. He even said so at the convention.

Some argue that Hossa disappeared when he was with the Pens/Wings.

He took a bad major against Nashville, yet Kane scored the SH tying goal, with Hossa in perfect position for the game winner.
Hossa at his cap hit is a very nice fit.
You also cannot compare Kane with Toews. 2 totally different players, yet their worth is very important as a whole.

Also, how can you say that anyone is more overrated than Kovalchuk?

Hossa:

The guy performs consistently, and scores consistently at basically the same pace (or at least good enough for govt work close) over a span of 4 seasons. Over the course of the guy's career hasn't really scored more than a point per game but 3 or 4 times and suddenly, "people expect" what?

Good lord,, and some of these people that are expecting are some of the same folks that love to lob around stats yet can't actually compare them from one season to the next - yet still have some sort of "expectation"?!

What, exactly, is this "expectation" actually based upon???

It isn't trending stats, it isn't career stats? It must come from the gut or something.

Exactly. You can't expect a guy that played until June in three straight seasons to be perfectly in shape and ready for the season. He was probably extremely tired last season and yet you still see him making plays.

His "drop kick" goal against the Lightning was just sick.
I'm glad I was there in person + had the DVR set for that one.

I'm also all eyes/ears to hear why Kane is overrated.

He isn't necessarily overrated in the entire NHL, but like someone else said he is overrated by Blackhawks fans. He's a good player, but sometimes he's too flashy and he is also a big diver. I hate diving so much. That's why I don't like most of the Canucks players, PK Subban, or Kane that much.

I doubt it's the Hawks fans inflating the value of Kane. Even if it is-- fine. Most Blackhawks fans are homers like the rest of sports fans. Kind of hard to get away from when he scored the game winning goal to win the cup.
I'm also not ignoring his personal issues as well.
I will hold true to the thread about his worth as a player. Some fans think Toews and Kane should not be paid the same. Give me a reason why.

I honestly would like to hear real hockey examples rather than some one giving me an interpretation on diving.

We all know Kane isn't a perfect 2-way player (some of us at least).
He's improved on his bad offensive zone PIMs.

I've heard the excuse that he chooses which games to show up to (which I think is a garbage excuse as well).

I really want to read some well thought out answers.

I'm not saying that he is a bad hockey player. He is very talented. He is just too flashy sometimes.

I don't have a problem with Toews and Kane being paid the same. They are both key contributors on the top line.

Kessel is a very deadly offensive player, the problem is it's when he wants to be. Last year he was a 3rd liner for a few games because of the way he plays. If he wouldn't be so lazy, and use his team around him he could be allot better.

The same could be said about Patrick Kane, but god forbid someone says something bad about Kane they will get ripped on here by the meatballs.

I like the guy, because he is a Hawk, but I'm not going to over-inflate his value. I could name 5-7 players on the Hawks alone who are more important to their success then Kane. Compound that around the league and there are MANY more players who hold more value then Kane.

Considering the praise and attention he gets, plus his contract, he is overrated.

Don't let the rose-colored Hawks glasses get in your way.

 Atleast i am not alone on this feeling.

I would like to see some responses on overrated how.
Naming names is fine, but what's the measuring stick? Salary, production, etc.

Phil Kessel? Good player on a bad team. I can see an argument of being overrated.

Bieksa overrated is a bit harsh.
Wiz? I can see the argument with the new salary. Decent shot on the blue line, but his +/- was from a bad Islanders team. I didn't shed a tear when he was traded to the Ducks, but he's serviceable.
Versteeg is an argument one could make.
Luongo? Overrated because he couldn't close game 7 or his 5-hole?

I'll be glad to break it down for you.

Phil Kessel is a player who plays only when he wants to play. He is a very good player, I give him that, but he is very streaky, games with 2+ points, then 3 or 4 games without doing anything.

Bieksa has never been anything special. Vancouver really stacked their blueline up last year and the cap has caught up with them. Everyone talked about how physical Bieksa was, but he takes on Stalberg, and Marleau, then Boston showed Vancouver what physical hockey is.

Sure, Wiz can shoot it, oh well, there is obviously something up with him being moved around quite a bit.

Versteeg is just Versteeg, always trying to be the go to guy, puck handling way to much then getting the puck stripped from him.

Luongo is well just Luongo as well. Like stated with Bieksa, Vancouver had a very stacked blueline, and that helped Luongo out big time.

I'm glad that you guys are willing to say that Kane isn't that great. He is a good offensive player, but he isn't better than Toews.
