You don't even enjoy the humor? The pilot is one of the best written pieces of tv i've ever seen.

My votes for overrated:

Six feet under
Frasier

no fuckin way. go back and watch six feet under. so many quotes from this show to remember as life goes on man. like TragiC would say "WOW!"

George: "You take the back-stabbing world of academia, throw in a controversial field like geology, you've got real trouble."
Claire: "Geology is controversial?"
George: "Oil, Claire. Oil."

I tried watching the first season of six feet under and I couldnt really handle it. That shit was so dark and depressing. Too much for me.

Sopranos delivered every same theme in a less gimmicky or theatrical way. The writers of the Sopranos were toying with the genre.

Sopranos also had a sense of humor that six feet under didn't

i liked both shows, but i liked Six Feet Under better then sopranos, if you think about it, I've felt "robbed" by Tony because of that ending. kinda like "oh, that's what you get".

EDit; forgot to add, sixfeetunder had lots of comedy it's was just dark humor but serious funny and at the same time you'll be like "oh **** that ain't right" laughing your ass off.

Sopranos blew the doors off with ratings and set things in motion. But Milch has hung around. See Deadwood, John from Cincinatti (WTF???), and Luck.

Also, I'm not a big Gary Shandling fan, but chroniclers of the Golden Age of TV we're living through give credit to the Larry Sanders Show and lots of other forays into original programming HBO was farting around with before it struck gold. And you really have to give them credit for that no matter if you hate pay channels. I GOT (no pun intended) HBO because of the Sopranos.

Their pedigree is to this day hard to argue with:

Their early comedy shit
Larry Sanders
Oz
Sopranos
Sex and the City
Six Feet Under
Rome
Deadwood
Carnivale
Life and Times of Tim (where you at Lance)
True Blood
Big Love
Game of Thrones
Enlightened (underrated, I'm told)
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Their later comedy shit (Ricky Gervais stuff, Life's Too Short)
True Detective (starring Alexandra Daddario nude)
Veep (I love Armando Iannucci but Veep is kind of dumb to me)
Silicon Valley

I'm sure I'm leaving a lot out, but they still set the bar

Anyone else remember dream on?

Why was Deal or No Deal popular.... I knew people who couldn't miss it, like some shit was gonna go down that would blow them away.

Got stuck watching an episode at my Dad's house once... that was enough models holding briefcases for me.

Friends, Lost, X-Files(yes, I went there), MASH, Dragon Ball Z(I went there too), House, Law and Order, Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory(I totally went there), Three's Company(like Friends of a different generation).

WHAT?!?!

24 was/is overrated as hell. It's aged REALLY badly and the season after season premise was awful. I haven't watched this new iteration of it yet so I can't speak for the newest season.

I think people confused "overrated" with shows they don't find entertaining.

It's like the Beatles issue from last week(?). I may not enjoy the Beatles music but I wouldn't call them overrated because I understand the social/musical impact and influence they had and still have. People calling shows like Friends, 90210, Big Bang Theory etc overrate kind of make me laugh. They are sitcoms. It wasn't supposed to be ground breaking TV. You're supposed to sit there and enjoy it and laugh a bit. If you don't find the shows funny or entertaining that's one thing but I don't see too many people holding up those TV shows as achievements in modern TV or socially remarkable.

Sopranos also invented the seasons on tape/dvd thing. Before that, the shit didn't really exist.

Roseanne. Lots of fat people in need of a shower

Roseanne was a pretty big deal for network TV. I think she was the first women to really "star" a sitcom since Lucille Ball.

You said in the GoT thread that you had never bothered to watch it.... did you watch it and you think the series is overrated or have you still not watched it but still are calling it overrated?

You forgot Mary Tyler Moore

The Mary Tyler Moore Show (originally known simply by the name of the show's star, Mary Tyler Moore) is an American television sitcom created by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns that aired on CBS from 1970 to 1977. The program was a television breakthrough, with the first never-married, independent career woman as the central character: "As Mary Richards, a single woman in her thirties, Moore presented a character different from other single TV women of the time. She was not widowed or divorced or seeking a man to support her."[1]

It has also been cited as "one of the most acclaimed television programs ever produced" in US television history.[1] It received high praise from critics, including Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series three years in a row (1975–77), and continued to be honored long after the final episode aired.

I've watched pieces of it here and there. None of these HBO series' have ever grabbed me and I've never understood why people are so obsessed with them.

Maybe you might better understand if you watched full episodes of the shows and absorbed the characters/plot a little bit, just a suggestion.

IMO its always a bit suspect to know a little bit of fragmented information on a topic and then come to a nice big broad conclusion.... but to each their own, deny yourself the majesty of GoT if you must :)
