Ok, I wanted to hold this off for my discussion with Fred on our next cast, but I feel I must devulge this now, because the topic is so important it cannot wait.
Do NOT and I repeat...DO NOT, see Terminator Salvation. It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I am a HUGE Terminator fan. I even thought T3 was alright. I am also a movie fan who can enjoy epic story driven plots like T1 or T2, or something that is stupid and fun like Alien vs Predetor Requiem. This pile of trash however, was neith story driven or fun, it was just stupid. The acting sucks, the story sucks, the only good thing about the movie were the special effects, which were by no means good enough to make me disregard how AWFUL the movie was. We are talking Starship Troopers bad here. We are talking It is a disgrace to the Terminator franchise.
SEMI-SPOILER ALTERT
I really feel that this movie should of been a sure fire slam dunk. The story was already written consdiering what we saw of the war in T1 and T2. Why not just make a simple story about post-judgment day, John rising the ranks, killing Terminators. Skynet becomiing more advanced, going from Terminators which u could detect to ones which you couldnt and the whole world being scared (but resiliant). Instead they do this HORRIFIC story of a half-man/half-terminator, WHO THINKS HE'S HUMAN!?!?!? WHAT!??!?!?!?One of the worst imagined charecters ever. Half the movie is him comming to grips with being a robot.....WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ANY OF THE AWESOMENESS THAT IS TERMINATOR!....the second half is John having to learn to "trust" him since he is so jaded of Terminators since they killed his father (I think McG forgot T2. THIS HAPPENED ALREADY! If you do not remember, John gained trust for them in T2 and in T3 him and Arnold were bossum buddies, so why all of a sudden the thought of a good Terminator is such a hard thing for him to believe!!!) The whole last 30 mintues of the movie are practicly unwatchable, sans a brief entrance by Arnold circa 1984. Nothing, however, NOTHING was worse the ending. The whole, giving the "heart" to John. Not only did my girlfriend and me call this scene occuring about 45 minutes earlier, but it was so dumb, so cheesy, so stupid, I wanted to barf all over the screen.
SPOILERS END
I may honestly seem waaay to angry about this film. I am. Like I said, I love Terminator and have been a fan since the begining. I had been looking forward to this movie for over a year. They could of seriously shown a T-800 shooting people for 2 hrs and I would of been happy. They didnt though. McG decided instead to film a giant turd for 2 hrs. Honestly, it is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. See Star Trek! Much better!
Ok, seriously. It was reviews like this that almost made me hold off seeing the movie all together. I was expecting it to be a train wreck of epic proportions. For all its warts, I enjoyed myself. The visual effects work is outstanding and make it worth its admission price. I'm still amazed at how well they pulled of Arnold circa-1985.
Did the movie have some cheesy one liners? Sure it did, but so did T1, T2 (some horrible one liners that people forgive), and T3. And sure, the heart thing is a little outlandish and you can see it coming a mile away. However, in a movie where you have to openly accept murderous bi-pedal robots and time travel, I don't think it's too big of a jump to ask the audience to make.
I also don't get the beef with Marcus (the half terminator). T1, T2, and T3 all went back in time and drastically f*cked with the time line. It stands to reason that after judgment day was delayed over and over that the future was going to turn out vastly different then what was originally predicted in T1. Skynet came up with a different means of infiltrating the resistance. Connor isn't going to default trust this thing because of his experience with Arnold in T2. It's completely different then anything he's seen before. The whole freaking future is different then what he was told...essentially the entire point of the movie.
Anyway, I won't apologize for it anymore. The movie should have been much better and Star Trek kicks its ass in every single way. However, I do hope they bring in a different director, keep the same actors, and proceed with a couple more of these. I was entertained and would like to see this story's conclusion.
