IMO, Ripken has disaster written all over it. He may very well be good but hes never managed a game at any level. For a team that is looking to bring young guys out and get good soon, it's too much of a risk for my liking.

I agree with what he said.

"I think, ultimately, it's the right baseball guy," Ripken said. "[Look at Cardinals manager] Mike Matheny. He had no managerial experience, but he was the right baseball guy.

"I don't think you should worry too much about overall big-league managerial experience. It's who is the right baseball guy for that position."

I wouldn't mind them considering mike scioscia. The angel's could scape goat him for their problems this year. There was a period of time not long ago he was considered one of the best in the game. It could just be a case of his message getting lost after being there for so long.

Scioscia is the opposite of what they want, though. Old school style. Wants vets.

I didn't hire Dale and he didn't end up too well.... just sayin'.

Seriously who even knows who Dale was before all of this?

I believe it comes down to respect from the players and are they willing to get behind a leader. Cal is pretty much an american icon for what he did in the game. I have no doubts that the players will bust their asses for him.

I look at it as he played non stop for 20 years and never quit. That is something I would like installed into the generation being developed.

But because of that they aren't going with an unproven guy which is why a guy like Ausmus probably doesn't get a shot.

Which is stupid. That was the reason they passed over Ryno even though most of the youth was already managed by him and won under him.

Lets call it for what it is.

Favoritism

Dale was under them in Bo-Sox. That is why he got picked.

Rizzo was their baby so they traded for him.

Not the new fav was Jed's boy in S.D.

We will see who gets picked. I just think they got burnt on the unproven guy and so you won't see the out of the box, no experience candidate here. Very few GMs get three managers.

There are now three jobs that I am aware of that one would objectively say are better spots than the Cubs. In no particular order:

Washington
New York
Cincinnati

Assume that Girardi re-ups with the Yanks, that probably means the two best candidates go to Wash/Cincy.

I think people blame him way too much for Prior. He's a great manager.

And he's taken 3 different teams to the post season, and should have been to the WS more than once.

He is not a Rickett's man however, and I really hope that Hinch isn't either.

If Girardi ever becomes available, the Cubs will nab him. Bank on it! Rickett's will spare no expense like he spared no expense when he wanted Theo.

It had more to do with persona. Dale did what he was told. He did not buck the ship like a good company man. He was not a leader and was a coach. No amount of experience was going to change that.

Being a manager has more to do with leadership and getting the respect of his boys. Everything else it is better to have quality coaches to deal with. But a manager should be just that.

Dale was a coach

girardi counter to the yankees offer was to be able to speak with the cubs first, so he has an interest to at least see what they have to offer..

either cashman eventually gives in and allows him to talk to the cubs or he gives himself a black mark in girardi eyes and makes girardi wait until Nov. 1st to talk to the cubs.

so, its not a matter of IF but when the cubs do get their opportunity to speak to girardi, they need to make sure he doesnt leave town without a deal..
he is probably the best youngest manager out there, and if their really looking to mold and bring up their young prospects all together in these next 2 seasons , its important that they have a stable manager and coaching staff to learn and grow under..
the cubs should offer girardi no less then a 6 yr and 36 mil contract

I didn't realize he had a 7 yr old. Moving would be a major decision with the the kids, but better now than when they're in high school. Stranger things have happened and it seems like there's desire to leave, whether or not he's public about it.

He a winning manager for sure. Gets to the playoffs year in and out. As for Prior that wasnt his fault. Prior got hurt when he ran into 2B from ATL. Never the same after he flipped onto his shoulder. Wood had horrible mechanics and everyone knew it. So again not Baker fault.

Girardi, who fielded a contract-extension offer Wednesday from the Yankees, has said publicly and told those close to him privately that family considerations will play a large role in his decision to return to the Yankees or field other offers. In other words, talking to the Cubs about an offer, sources close to him say.

According to at least one national report Wednesday night, Girardi countered the Yankees’ offer with “parameters” it might take for him to return. His contract expires at the end of the month.

Those “parameters” are believed to go well beyond financial considerations — and, according to a source, are believed to include permission to talk to the Cubs before committing to the Yankees.
