He a winning manager for sure. Gets to the playoffs year in and out. As for Prior that wasnt his fault. Prior got hurt when he ran into 2B from ATL. Never the same after he flipped onto his shoulder. Wood had horrible mechanics and everyone knew it. So again not Baker fault.

Bakers fault, Hendry's fault, Priors fault, Ramirez's fault, Bartman's fault...Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah!

Always point to an individual. Yeah! It's never the team.

How many young players wouldn't "buy in" to Ripken Jr as a manager?

There would be a lot more buying in then Hinch, Martinez, or Alomar Jr. that's for sure. These young guys are at the age that Ripken was probably an icon in there eyes as a kid.

depends on how he presents himself from the start... like all managers, you earn players attention and respect the very first day with what you say and do.

Dusty Baker got fired from the reds for the same reason he got fired from the cubs, he couldnt get a playoff caliber team to the big dance..

Girardi, who fielded a contract-extension offer Wednesday from the Yankees, has said publicly and told those close to him privately that family considerations will play a large role in his decision to return to the Yankees or field other offers. In other words, talking to the Cubs about an offer, sources close to him say.

According to at least one national report Wednesday night, Girardi countered the Yankees’ offer with “parameters” it might take for him to return. His contract expires at the end of the month.

Those “parameters” are believed to go well beyond financial considerations — and, according to a source, are believed to include permission to talk to the Cubs before committing to the Yankees.

Thanks!

So all wishful thinking by someone trying to sell papers. Could totally be true, but that piece is an example of pandering for sales by the Sun Times IMO

Isn't it get to the playoffs and then let the cards fall where they may in all sports not just baseball?
No. If it was to just get to the playoffs, Baker would likely still be the manager of the Reds. The goal is to win it all. If an organization doesn't think the manager can win it all when they (the management) believe the team is competitive enough, then he usually gone.

I thought Sandberg was the obvious choice for the young players helping them succeed once they got to MLB, but imho Cal could have that same impact on them and put it all together. He would certainly be an interesting choice. Girardi is obviously the primary target, but if that isn't going to happen, I would hope he gets a serious look.

He was fired for challenging Jocketty. He wasn't getting fired. The hitting coach was and Baker said if you are going to fire anyone, fire me. Jocketty did. I think Jocketty should have been fired. You have almost nothing but left handed bats and you do nothing to help yourself in the season.

So, IOW, the team didn't perform up to the expectations of the management and someone got fired. If he had an inclination that Baker was getting the job done, Baker would still be there.

I don't argue with why Baker is gone, nor the goal of the organization, nor that the GM's usually fire managers for not winning Championships.

intelligent ones keep those guys however. For example see the Atlanta Braves.

Get a team to the playoffs is the key. The goal is to win the WS, but you can't do that without getting to the playoffs.

Yeah. Kids aren't very impressionable at 8-10 years of age. [/sarcasm]

To remember like you are asking? Clearly you are young. That's not a put down so please do not take it as such.

They didn't have a close relationship. I don't care who comes in. If the Reds stay status que they wont win anything.
