Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)
If it gets to arbitration, each side submits their demand/offer, correct? Say he asks for $4 Million and the Hawks offer $2.5. If the arbitor (?) finds in favor of the Hawks, does he have to sign? If he finds in favor of Niemi, are the Hawks committed to that much? What happens if it ends up in the middle somewhere? Just wondering what the outcomes can be besides him signing before they even get to the table.
That's correct DBQ. Each side makes its demand and if no resolution is agreed before the hearing date, it goes to hearing where each side puts on its evidence about the value of the player. Like any evidentiary proceeding, certain things are admissible as evidence and certain things are not. The player, if he wants to stay in the league, must accept the arbitrator's award (i.e. the salary adjudicated to be proper). If the team does not accept the award, it can walk away and the player becomes a UFA.

In this market, Zito's hardball could come back to bite Niemi in the ass. Because if the Hawks walk away from an award they deem too steep, there is a substantial risk that Niemi floats out in UFA-land like so many UFA's this year. Nabby just signed in the KHL. Based on what Ellis, Leighton, et al. got, good luck on the open market this year, Niemi.

Exactly. Now you also have the other side in Halak. Then again he was traded for. So if they were to give Niemi 4 mil that is a HUGE risk for a guy with only 54 NHL games under his belt. The Hawks won the Stanley Cup because they had a GREAT TEAM, not because they had a GREAT GOALIE. I'm surprised at this actually. Since this is the DREAM ORGANIZATION to play for and all, and McDonough is the lead of all thats good, yet Niemi is not a Team Player?

Something just isnt right here. We already knew Zito stuck up for Tallon and threw McDonough under the bus, so I guess it just doesn't pass the smell test.

Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)

In 2008-2009 Hawks spent $11+M on goaltenders.

In 2009-2010 Hawks spent $6+M on goaltenders.

If Neimi gets $4M they will spend what, $5M on goalies? Am I missing something?

Call Neimi greedy all you want but 99.8% of the time it's always about the money. I gaurentee if the Cap situation gets brought up in abritration Zito will say that's not his client's fault. And he'll be correct. If everything were puppydogs and sunshine Ladd and Burish would have stayed here for the league minimum, but it's not. Campbell would have taken a couple mil less to "win".

What's the backup plan if Niemi walks?

No Shit Eric. I'm sure Zito has represented which will get the most money. But knowing several of our players I will tell you it doesnt always mean as much. Both Toews and Kane most certainly could have gotten MUCH LARGER offers than they took to stay.

As for comparing what we spent to what we are spending now excuse us for learning a hard fucking lesson. Captain Obvious.

Personally I'd say we keep Huet and not dump him to Rockford/KHL. Then Call Corey Crawford from Rockford and hope for the best.

It's hilarious that he lists his LSAT score and law school courses among his "credentials." Maybe that's acceptable in the world of sports agents, but if a real lawyer did that, he would be laughed out of the bar.

Their combined Cap hit would be higher than Niemi making $4M + Crawford.

Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!" (arbitration confirmed)

Niemi has a Cup to his credit, but $4 million per anum (I like that would cause it is close to anus) is a little too much, I believe. He gets anything over $3, bye now! It is too bad that it is going to be so late in the game when we do find out. I am sure that many UFA goalies would have loved to come here to be the #1 in front of the team we have.

Huet needs to be moved if the Hawks want to have a complete roster.

Hawks can't afford that much, plain and simple. If he wants to play for the Hawks, he'll need to play for less. If he wants to walk, he has to hope an arbitrator sees it his way, give him a sizeable award so that the Hawks have to let him go, and then he'll have to see what he can get in the free agency market.
I gaurentee if the Cap situation gets brought up in abritration Zito will say that's not his client's fault. And he'll be correct.
The Hawks' cap situation is inadmissible evidence. It cannot be considered or brought up at the hearing.

Question of the day. Stan better have an answer ready because Niemi may well be positioning himself such that the Hawks have to let him walk.

Re Towes and Kane, very true however when their current deals are expiried they will be 26 and UFAs...cha-ching! But okay, maybe they are the .2% exception but let's not forget the endorsements available to them, being the faces of the franchise and all. Didn't you say Wiz woulda rather gotten his ass kicked than lose the $275K? Yeah, cap management is a hard fucking lesson.

General statement: I'm just trying to understand all the agnst being shown towards Neimi, who was labled a savior as long as he was making $750K or whatever it was.

What's plan B if he's not here in 4 months?

Exactly and I'm not sure what's out there? All the other mid tier guys have been signed: Ellis, Mason, Leighton (gulp), Nitti. Maybe Turco comes here on the cheep? Maybe? Boucher and Lalime are still out there, who's comfortable they can excel playing in front of this vaunted team?

The Hawks may have no choice but to accept the award and figure out a way to make it work for a year. If that happens say hello to 3-4 more $500K bodies filling the bottom lines. Or if just anyone can win behind this team, as I've been reading, just play Crawford.

Lalime just signed a 1-year deal with Buffalo, so he's gone. Turco would be interesting. Crawford hasn't been given much of a chance. Not ideal, but it may not be the end of the world. Glad we/they won the Cup this year, though!

There is no angst if he's a team player. And excuse me for not being the one where he was our Savior as I said this team would win no matter what goalie they had in there.

So, if he gets 4 mil, see ya and go to option B. Assuming they've thought of option B.

And I don't see what Wiz getting his ass kicked verses losing 250k has to do with the Salary he's making but what ever.
