I hope they keep Niemi, but should they decide to go with Turco and use the addl money to upgrade the 3rd defensive pairing it would be understandable. I guess another factor would be Niemi's return in a trade.

Either way we will all know tomorrow.

Agreed. Not to mention after next year he's UFA and can just walk for nothing in return either way.

Ruling hurts Hawks' chances

11:17AM ET

Antti Niemi | Blackhawks | Interested: Blackhawks

Initially after Saturday's arbitration result that gave Antti Niemi $2.75 million for next season, it appeared the Chicago Blackhawks had a good chance to keep their Stanley Cup winning goalie. Originally, it was thought that any reward below $3 million would bode well for the Hawks. Not so fast, writes Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com.

The Blackhawks reportedly submitted a $1.5 million offer to the arbitrator - far lower than what was expected. If this is the case, the Hawks' seemed to be hoping for a lower ruling than they received.

There is a way to keep Niemi blogs Tim Sassone with the Daily Herald. But it would involve lots of squeezing, and having a roster of 20 or 21 players.

Is keeping Niemi worth giving up one or two roster spots? Remember how Saturday, Marty Turco - a possible replacement for Niemi - said he wasn't going to Philadelphia? He would be a cheaper option for Chicago.

The Blackhawks still have about 24 hours to decide their goalie's fate and what they will do is still anyone's guess.

And so it begins, lets hope this doesn't drag out as long as the arbitration. I ALSO want to go on record saying that I don't like Sassone mentioning Cullimore and the hawks together!

I'd rather have Niemi over Turco but Dante did convince me that Turco's puck moving style would be interesting but I do think Turco is not that great anymore and I think Niemi would keep more pucks out of the net but Turco might generate more offense.[/quote]

I am admittedly not a number cruncher or the like when it comes to the Cap with all the rules and crap that goes with it. From this simpleton's point of view, if you can keep Niemi and still ice a solid team then Niemi > Turco.

But it doesnt look like that can happen (piggybacking off of others here and elsewhere that are more knowledgeable then myself).

But only for one year (sure UFA contracts could go out but unlikely)? If it is just for one year? Turco > Niemi. To me, Turco at 1.5 is a steal. Then worry about next year, next year. Ultimately, Hawks got the Cup and now have to pay for it. There are no great answers and to me, HJ was the must sign and he is. Turco I am sure wants his name on the Cup. I doubt he NEEDS the money and at 35, he knows he is out of time. Of the contenders for the Cup (at this point and on paper), the Hawks are the best candidate for that.

I will never knock Niemi....he has his name etched and pulled out HUGE saves and wins throughout the season. But Niemi does remain a bit of an unknown. He had (arguably) the best D core in front of him. We know exactly what you get from Turco. Dont know that from Niemi.

If money was equal? Niemi hands down. He is the investment of the future. But alas, that is not the case.

And once again, please take the above with a grain of salt since Turco is one of my favorites to watch; I admit a bit of a biased opinion.

Rogers is an idiot. While they only have 24 hours to decide, although NHLPA is showing it's signed already, they can most definitely SIGN AND TRADE him at ANY TIME before Sept.

The ruling gives the Hawks the options now. Where as if it were over three they might have just had to walk away as to not have to make another move just to sign him.

Honestly I'd rather have Niemi but I'd take either him or Turco at this point. Especially if Turco's number is 1.5 or less.

What's the minimum Turco can sign for, let's just do that and have them both. Screw Crawford. Haha

No Turco in Philly

9:38AM ET

Marty Turco | Stars | Interested: Blackhawks

Marty Turco is not coming to the Philadelphia Flyers says CSN Philly's Tim Panaccio.

The Flyers were considered one of two teams in on Turco - the other being the Chicago Blackhawks. The fact that this Turco news broke the day Hawks goalie Antti Niemi was awarded $2.75 million in arbitration should only add fuel to the rumors that Turco will end up in Chicago.

Several reports have indicated that Turco is Chicago's top backup option if they elect to walk away from Niemi's contract, or trade him. It's unclear if there are other teams in on Turco, but for the moment, it appears the Hawks are now the clear front runner to land the former Vezina Trophy finalist's services.

Turco can sign for what ever he wants. He's not an idiot and clearly sees the CORE the Hawks have and the chance of repeating is still extremely good at this point.

I have to chuckle at all those suggesting the Hawks have been decimated. Either they are jealous the Hawks won the Cup, or just out right stupid.

We have a weiner!

Fans of other teams are definitely jealous and laugh at me saying "HAHA THE HAWKS LOST HALF THEIR TEAM!!!!!" I just laugh and say:

a) Stanley Cup Champions.

b) Who's drought is longer, the Hawks or the _____________?

c) I break down the Hawks core and compare it to their inferior core of players.

4) They shut the **** up.

Besides it's going to be a rare thing for a team to repeat in the Salary Cap era... so I am happy I got to witness greatness last year and probably will at least once or twice in the coming decade with all of the young talent in the pipeline.

Another good thing about Turco is that we don't need a tough guy any more

I thought there was a league vet. minimum or something? Must be the other sports. Ohh and it was also TIC and I know Turco will sign for nothing less than he knows he can get.

I'm not sure if there is. I wasn't aware one existed. I've definitely been incorrect in the past so who knows.

After this year he turns 35 which means team can sign him for an incentive based contract so there is no doubt this year he'll go for one year either way.

I have no problem with Turco if that's the avenue they chose. Last year they didn't need a goalie so I was against the move. This year if it gives us some wiggle room, go for it.

nice work on the breaking news Ton, now the "fun" part comes.

We all knew that they would accept the arbitration number, the question is, do they keep him now or trade him. Tic toc, tick toc. They have a while till they have to, but that's not to say that Turco will be around.

Basically, it comes down to this.

1) Sign Niemi, and roll with a 20 man roster all year, and hope we ONLY have LTIR injuries this season, and play with a short bench in the case of day to day injuries.

2) Sign Niemi and trade him, or let him walk to UFA, and take our chances with a cheaper goalie for a year until this bonus penalty comes off. Allows us to ice a 22 man roster and have room for subs in case of day to day type injuries.

Pretty easy decision to me. Thanks Niemi, love you, but your agent is a ****** and you'll probably be playing for a shit team next year.

Agreed on all points. Zito might have cost Niemi a good career and proper payout with his badly timed hardball game.

Let him walk as a UFA? they already accepted the arbitration... How does that work?

I didn't see that the Hawks had actually SIGNED him for that much. If they have, then scratch that UFA comment.
