I didn't see that the Hawks had actually SIGNED him for that much. If they have, then scratch that UFA comment.
NHLPA is showing they accepted the offer.

Gotcha. This is the first time I've been online since Friday morning, so I've missed a few things. I really do expect a sign and trade here, and if we don't see any official announcement from the Hawks soon, that is very likely what's happening. I mean, if they were planning on keeping him, wouldn't they have had some news released during the convention? Would make the most sense from a PR perspective, though, Niemi wasn't there, so it doesn't really matter.

Edit: I really kind of feel bad for Niemi in this situation. I don't think he really understands everything that is happening. :(

Me too. I just can't shake the feeling that he got overwhelmed by the whole Cup winning experience and then fooled by the smooth-talking agent man promising extravagant riches. He is after all not far removed from being an unknown in his own country driving zambonis to get extra cash.

agreed 100%. Smoking outside the Hilton made me realize how really stupid some of our fans are! hahahaha
Yeah but I don't quite understand how they'd have a short bench? Couldn't they just call someone up from Rockford instead of playing short handed?

The Salary Cap says hello. They need money for the call-up and if there are a couple of regulars out with small ailments, they don't have enough cap space to fill the missing spots with call-ups and are therefor forced to ride a short bench.

I thought there was an exception in the case of injuries, especially long term ones? Like I said, I'm not sure, not quite up on how everything works salary cap wise. Heard about LTIE, what is that?

That's my take on it... I think Niemi probably wants to play in Chicago, and Zito is just feeding him what he wants to hear. Something like "we're going to end up in Chicago, we just want them to pay us what you are worth. Don't worry.". I mean, his English isn't the best from the interviews I've heard with him, so who knows.

Only injuries that hit LTIR come off of the cap, from what I understand. You have to allow yourself enough cap space to cover day to day injuries that aren't coming off the cap.

Okay so only long term injuries qualify for that, I think I understand that part. But even with Niemi, wouldn't they still have around 550k, which would be enough to call up a player if needed to in times of injury? And what's this LTIE stand for I've been hearing about?

LTIE/LTIR - Long term injury exception/reserve, same thing basically. When a player is injured more than 25 days or 10 games (numbers could be off) he can be replaced by a player with up to the same caphit as the injured player. The injured players caphit does not get removed anywhere. Obviously when the injured player returns, the team must get under the cap. With smaller injuries this can not be done. A 550k would be enough to bring up one replacement, but if there are more than one injury at a time there would be no space to get more replacements.

Not quite. The cap payroll is accrued on a day by day basis. So a team that is 500K below the cap for the first 20 games of a season could bring in multiple injury replacements in games 21, 22, and 23. The shit hits the fan, I believe, if a team has multiple short-term injuries very early in the season or in the preseason without accruing cap space.

This may be the underlying reason why there's no room in the inn for Niemi.

Yeah but if someone goes down even for a short term injury cant they be placed on LTIR? I know it aint a perfect solution but we can limp through the season. I'd rather have Niemi and are we going to have room for him next year if he has a good year I'd estimate him at 3.5-4 mil. Would we be able to fit that next year?

No, because they would be unable to return until 25 days or 10 games has passed...

From the CBA...

If, however, the League wishes to challenge the determination

of a Club physician that a Player is unfit to play for purposes of the Bona-Fide Long-

Term Injury/Illness Exception, the League and the NHLPA shall promptly confer and

jointly select a neutral physician, who shall review the Club physician's determination

regarding the Player's fitness to play.

I'm guessing the Bettman and crew would take a hard look at something that was not obvious.

Toews tweaks a groin. Instead of being out for 2 games, he now misses 10. Yeah, no thanks.

Yeah, i'm expecting a sign and trade too. At least if they trade him, they can pick the team that he goes too. Preferably to the East, and preferably to a team that is probably not going to make the playoffs.
