Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!"
Niemi is going to be disappointed testing the market, I think. Too many teams with solid goaltending, and too many options out there for the very few that actually need help.

I don't see how he doesn't end up in Chicago.
He's a RFA, so he can't really "test the market," though an offer sheet could come in. Haven't heard details of what the terms were of the QO made by the Hawks. If he doesn't like it, his only recourse, assuming he wants to stay in the league, is to demand arbitration.

Tampa Bay and St Louis are the only teams that come to mind that could make a play for Niemi. Also, Turco, Ellis, and Mason are UFA's that won't be much more expensive without having to give up draft pick compensation.

Unless someone makes him an offer we can't match.
All the power to them. Thanks for the draft picks. What team out there do you seriously see tendering an offer sheet on Niemi? I can't think of a single team that would do that, even if it just costs them a 2nd rounder.

Why would St. Louis make a play for him when they already have RFA rights to Halak? Tampa is really the only option, and I don't see them passing up on the UFA goalies out there to give Niemi an offer sheet that will cost them picks. Niemi is going to arbitration if he doesn't like the Hawks' offer.

Actually now after watching some chips fall, not that concerned about niemi. Like it's been said, with the vast amount of ufa goalies out there, is he worth a 1st and a 3rd?

Love that Niittymaki signed with the Sharks. I think they were the only team I was concerned might go after Niemi.

Looks like Ellis is going to Tampa, so strike that one.

Yep no surprise after San Jose made a great move picking up Nitty Gritty another great Finnish goalie.

Re: Niemi makes me say "NO!"

The signings of Nittymaki (2 million) and Leighton (1.55 million) is the best benchmark Niemi has to gauge what he can ask for and hope to get. He's not going to get the big pay day just yet that Zito was filling his head with. 2-2.5m would be just about right for him. Really hope he resigns as he's just going to get better and better and I don't want it to be on another team.

By the way when can we expect to hear what's happening with Huet contract. Really thought it would be off the books by today as nobody will take that contract on.

I wouldn't go THAT far. He's not a superstar but he's better than Nabokov:

Sorry. Forgot all about the Halak deal. And now it rumoured that Tampa is going to sign Ellis.

According to LeBrun, Scotty Bowman called Nitty one of the most underrated UFA's out there. And Doug Wilson said he was the guy they wanted. They signed him for a pretty reasonable salary.

That's exactly what he is.. then again he's nowhere near the talent of Rinne for comparison.

Don't ask any flyer or Lightening fans about that one. Yikes!

Niemi will get no more than 2.5 per season if he goes to arbitration.... If he even gets that.

I originally said 2.5-3 but seeing these other guys, he's not worth more than that Pez.

Appears these guys are not getting as much as they wanted.

All these signings bode well for the Hawks and their attempt to sign Niemi. Now if Nabakov signs for around $2 mil per, that will help too.
