When Ryan the Pole took over, he started a tear down of the roster. At the time players on the Bears included:

Roquan Smith
Robert Quin
Allen Robinson
James Daniels

A year of much pain and "tanking" ensued.

Now he has replaced them with

TJ Edwards
Nate Davis
Tremaine Edwards
DJ Moore
Might be the first thing anyone has posted that actually didn’t make me feel terrible

Whenever a GM prioritizes who HE wants, fans assume he didn't because it's not who THEY want.
Yes, you make a good point. Maybe Poles top plan was to spend big on LB and try to find value everywhere else. The only problem with that is that is a hard pill to swallow to think Edmunds was the top FA priority when we had the most cap space in the league.

Poles specifically stated the importance of premium positions a few weeks ago at the combine. He let Roquan go last season. But now he turns around and goes into a full bidding war for LB...?! It leaves me perplexed. I dont understand the rationale.

"We're always gonna look at pass rushers, we're gonna look at offensive lineman, corners," Poles said to start the offseason. "I always start with the premium positions to see, you know, are we good enough in those? And then move on from there."

remember when he was the best GM in the mid to late rounds? A claim that to this day has never been backed.

The Will LB in the Tampa 2 is one of the two most important positions on the defense, Edmunds is a perfect fit for the position, young as hell, a proven multiple time pro bowler and a hyperathlete while his contract didn't reset the market.

It filled a major need with a proven player with very little question marks - whereas the DT market had less certainty in the players that made up the position.

I'm not sure but maybe there's value to be had on the backend of FA with the middle/bottom tier players. Maybe we take 2-3 swings on mid tier guys and get lucky and one sticks - not sure.

The thing that bugs me right now about this off-season is the two biggest areas of concern heading into the off-season haven’t been addressed yet. We need a tackle on both sides of the ball and the best we got so far is a guy who might play DT on rotation.
Fixed it for you.

“The thing that bugs me right now about the off-season is the two biggest areas of concern heading into the off-season haven’t been addressed not because of the Bears FO, but from players choosing a different destination. Chaps my ass how Poles can’t rewire every free agent’s brain to have them come to Chicago no matter what.”

I didn't realize Austin Eckeler had 38 touchdowns the last two years. Holy shit. Talk about flying under the radar. I've really never paid much attention to him.

Draft isn’t here yet. Let’s wait and see what the draft brings. Homer was mainly brought in for his pass catching/blocking and special teams. I’m not even a big fan of this but it makes sense
It’s just weird timing that’s throwing everyone off. This is a guy you sign in a week, not during the tampering period. Guarantee you if this happened on 3/23 instead ppl would be all over this value signing lol

Draft a RB and Poles is basically spending 4 million for the entire RB room on the roster.

In general, I am trying to consider whether or not great tackles come out in Free Agency.

It does not seem like any team lets a great tackle go out in FA...ever.

It seems that teams with pretty damn good quarterbacks drafted the tackles that are protecting them. Maybe that's just a general observation that some poster can disprove for me.

Operating under this general criteria, it makes sense that Poles is not terribly committed to investing a lot of resources into Tackle via FA when most signs point to investing in Tackle in the Draft because that is where the bigger home run is to be had.

The only issue is that the Bears have always struck out with 1st round Tackles. The last time the Bears took a Tackle in the Top 10 was Jimbo Covert in 1983. Coincidentally, he is also in the HOF. His arrival kickstarted a decade of success for the franchise that has not been recaptured since his departure.
