I think Arden Key could be a good underrated signing for a DE spot. Yannick Ngakoue is the player most talked about to sign during FA (for good reason, as he is consistent and solid), but Key would be an alright consolation signing.

81.3 PFF grade this year. He's still young at 26 and seems to be becoming a solid player. Good year in Jacksonville this year. He had 6.5 sacks in SF last year. I'm going to throw away his first 3 years for the Raiders who were a mess of an organization.

And again, I don't care how tenuous a career can be. Players know that, and don't care either. Roquan didn't care when he turned down the Bears offer. Allen Robinson didn't. Lamar Jackson didn't when he turned down 133M guaranteed a couple months ago. And he didn't come crawling back to the Ravens for that deal after he actually hurt his knee as a mobile QB. Why? Because they all knew/thought they could get contracts they wanted. Guys decline tons of money ALL the time, I just gave you 3 examples. Pretty much every player that's worth a damn turns down money from their current team for a bigger payday on the open market.

Why would Mooney take less than he thinks he can get on the open market? What about that statement you made makes any sense to you?

Who cares about the transition tag? It's not used very much at all. Name another time other than Kyle Fuller when a player was on one.

And I didn't say they have to pay more than they're worth, which you seem to be talking about. I said they have to pay more than a team friendly discount. Because players are giving up the opportunity to hit the open market, they are compensated for that. It's called opportunity cost, ironically enough. Cooper Kupp made 7M his first 4 years, then he signed what at the time was highest WR AAV in the league at 26.7M. Do you think that's a discounted rate? Or is that the rate of a top WR in the league that another team would pay him if he ever hit the market?
Like I said before, because you don't care about the potential of career ending and income debilitating injury or believe the transition tag exists has zero bearing on whether or not a player does.

Frankly, your assertion that they never give a thought about injury is so stupfying, I don't even know how to respond.

Agreed. It takes some guys a little longer to mature, put it all together, etc. I think he could be a solid contributor.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of adding a wide receiver like Jerry Juedy, who has WR1 talent, but the Bears would need to give him, Claypool, AND Mooney an extension. That’s not happening.

This rebuild isn’t going to be instant. The Bears still need to improve the offensive line and rebuild the defense.

Poles isn’t going to rush this. Trade down and draft a WR next year, so he’s cost controlled for 5 seasons. There are plenty of good options next year (Marvin Harrison Jr., Xavier Worthy, Troy Franklin, Emeka Egbuka, Malik Nabers, etc.)

I hear what you're saying, and I think the defense and the offensive line will definitely be addressed through free agency and the draft. But he also has to address the WR position. They have 4 guys under contract Mooney, Claypool, St. Brown, and Jones Jr. In my opinion, which you can disagree with, the Bears need to continue to build around Justin Fields and that includes improving the offensive line and the talent around him. The only receiver he had any confidence in was Mooney, he missed 5 games but was only a pace to catch 59 passes for 698 yards the other primary receiver, Claypool was on a pace (Bears only) to catch 34 balls for 340 yards. We're not talking about Jamar Chase & Tee Higgins, DeVonta Smith & AJ Brown, or Tyreke Hill & Jaylen Waddle. I mean seriously, what are you worried about, and why are you worried about paying Claypool and Mooney when they haven't earned it yet? If the Bears were to pursue Jeudy (or anyone else for that matter) and they came away with 1 great receiver and 2 very good ones, that works.

Never said it was the #1 factor for him. I simply stated that it played a role. $$ played a role in his decision.

He can still give close to home as his number 1 reason and still have $$ play a factor

I’m assuming you didn’t read my initial post correctly or something and just went into full vortex defense mode

But you don't know that it played a role as it is entirely possible his offer from Chicago was still higher net of taxes. Again what is the point of speculating when he already told us why he signed for less?

I'm sorry, I gotta argue this and then I'm done with this conversation.

But it's not the same concept at all. The conversation was players taking LESS money for security/injury purposes and NOT hitting the open market. Someone weighing different options on the open market and choosing less money for a better situation is not the same. They are still getting the luxury to choose between 2 knowns. You sign a player before he hits the market he's choosing the known (his team and contract on the table) over the unknown (different teams, different contracts).

And Demaryius Thomas said he would take a discount, that doesn't mean he did. When he signed his deal in 2015, he had the biggest WR contract in NFL history until Julio Jones got a quarter mil more per year (Dez Bryant tied Thomas as well).

Nope. CJ and Fitz both had 100m contracts with larger AAV than Thomas that they signed in 2012 and 2011 respectively.

Speaking of Dez, he also talked about a discount. So it is more likely that both took a discount given they got less AAV despite signing their deals at young ages and despite have comparable or better production than CJ and Fitz at that time.

"I'm loyal to the squad," Bryant said back in May, according to MacMahon. "I've always been. Me and my agent are going to talk about [a hometown discount]. We'll talk about it. You know, this is big. This is life-changing. Like I said, I've done everything asked of me, and we'll see what happens."

I mean 16 career sacks doesn't move the needle much. Al-Q had 7 sacks last year and we saw how that turned out this year. If you are going to spend then spend on a guy like Yannick who is as consistent as the come.

What he said was : To just pull a number out of his ass. To me that does not mean $10million for sure!! He was just throwing a number out as an example.
It was sarcasm
