This draft could be really, really good. A lot of it is still rumors since we haven't seen officially that a bunch of these guys signed, but Baez, Vogelbach, Dunston Jr., Gretsky, and Maples is quite a haul.

Waldo, it would be greatly appreciated if you could either post tweets in quotes or the links to the tweets/articles themselves so nobody thinks you're just making shit up

Bleacher Nation was passing the rumor on that Maples left football practice and told people there that he had signed with the Cubs. Haven't seen anything official though, but it could be quite a haul this year.

Actually looks like the Maples signing is more than just rumors.
Kendall Rogers tweeted this an hour ago:
Cubs 14th-rdr and #UNC signee Dillon Maples didn't show up for football today, took physical yesterday. He will be signing. #mlbdraft #MLB
The number I'm hearing attached to Maples is huge for his round ..... waiting for a second confirmation right now. #mlbdraft #MLB

Yeah unforunately as exciting as it is to get all of these guys most of them are 18 year old high school kids that will be here in 3 years at the earliest. However, the low minors are starting to get real interesting again, and hopefully we won't have to go through another season where we go out and get Doug Davis and Rodrigo Lopez types to fill out the rotation.

Everyone was a prospect once. Just hope the Cubs drafted the right ones, but looks promising. I don't expect the Cubs to seriously contend for a while so I'm just excited to have a chance to follow these kids. At least they seem like the right ones, unlike Hayden Simpson

But maybe they'll contend next year and prove me wrong and that might be exciting too.

Look at NYY,BOS, and PHI. They just keep spending money to win. They dont have to rebuild with specs. Cubs should be able to do it that way. You cant compare Cubs to PIT or TBR. Have to compare them to BIG MARKET

Yes, let's look at NYY, BOS, and PHI.

Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jocoby Elisbury, Jed Lowrie, Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, Johnathan Papelbon, Daniel Bard have all been big for the RedSox this year... and all BOS draft picks. Jason Veritek (2 years in BOS system after coming over from SEA) came out of their farm system. Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett were acquired through trading top-level prospects... acquired through the draft.

Derek Jeter, Brett Gardner, Jorge Posada, Phil Hughes, David Robertson, Joba Chamberlain were all Yankee draft picks, while Robinson Cano, Ivan Novoa, and Mariano Rivera were international FAs and brought up through their farm system. Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, and Alex Rodriguez were all acquired through trading prospects acquired through the draft.

Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Dominic Brown, Cole Hamels, Vance Worley, Ryan Madson, and Michael Stutes were all drafted by the Phillies while Antonio Bastardo came up through their farm system as an international FA. They acquired Cliff Lee (the first time), Roy Halladay, and Roy Oswalt by trading prospects acquired through the draft.

In other words, the good teams develop players for their own purposes... while surrounding them with proven veterans through trading the prospects they have no need for or through free agency. Why can't the Cubs do this too?

But we don't need them to be ready within the next 3-4 years. the sooner, the better... for sure, but we do have talent ahead of them.

Brett Jackson, right now, looks like he's ready to challenge for a starting OF spot in ST next year. I'd like to see LaHair given a shot, but I don't think he's the future. However, you do have Josh Vitters, Rebel Ridling, and Justin Bour making headway on the farm... and could be ready to make debuts in 2013-2014. There's also Ryan Flaherty who could be ready about that time as well to take over 3B and provide some decent LH pop. Pitching wise, Cashner should be due to return shortly, though I still think he's best suited for the pen. I still hold out hope for Coleman, but that's waning. Carpenter and McNutt may be our best hopes coming off the farm for SP, but this is where I think the team should be proactive by making a push to sign CJ Wilson, if the Rangers let him even sniff free agency this winter.

Wow, a lot of dough for him... but he went 2nd round because most thought he'd head to college rather than sign. I thought overall, he was the best pick this year... as he's a 1st round talent (according to scouting reports) that was picked up in the 2nd round.

We could use the talent to be ready as soon as possible. I was more tempering my excitement with the reminder that these guys have a long way to go before making it to the big leagues.

Brett Jackson, right now, looks like he's ready to challenge for a starting OF spot in ST next year.
No doubt. Brett Jackson is the most exciting prospect to come through the system since Starlin Castro. I am very hopeful about him next year
I'd like to see LaHair given a shot, but I don't think he's the future.
28 year olds mashing in the PCL are a dime a dozen unforunately. Micah Hoffpauir version 2.0 might be overselling his abilities.
However, you do have Josh Vitters, Rebel Ridling, and Justin Bour making headway on the farm... and could be ready to make debuts in 2013-2014.
Vitters is interesting if he can handle a position besides 1B defensively, and maybe learn to take a walk every once in a while. Right now he isn't terrible exciting. Justin Bour has been pretty bad since that great start, and I wouldn't be too excited about him til he did it for a whole year at AA or above.
There's also Ryan Flaherty who could be ready about that time as well to take over 3B and provide some decent LH pop.
Flaherty is interesting, but I wouldn't be penciling him in as a starter anytime soon. He might end up just being a bench guy that can fill in multiple spots, which is useful but nothing exciting.
Pitching wise, Cashner should be due to return shortly, though I still think he's best suited for the pen.
You might be right but that would be very unforunate because he is the only pitcher within a couple years of making it to the big league level that has the potential to be a top of the rotation guy.

I still hold out hope for Coleman, but that's waning.
The hope is that he is a serviceable fifth starter, and that is pretty iffy. One of the few positives out of the Zambrano mess is that it finally has forced Quade's hand to let him to take a turn every fifth day again.
Carpenter and McNutt may be our best hopes coming off the farm for SP, but this is where I think the team should be proactive by making a push to sign CJ Wilson, if the Rangers let him even sniff free agency this winter.
I've been pushing for CJ Wilson as the big free agent acquisition for a couple of months now. McNutt is probably the best hope, but he has really struggled with injuries and consistentcy this season. Hopefully he figures it out and is healthy next year. Chris Carpenter right now doesn't have the secondary pitches to be a starter, and probably is best suited as a backend of the bullpen guy. However, he could be a real nice arm with that triple digit heat. Another guy to keep an eye on is Nicholas Struck who I believe is still 21 and doing decently at AAA after being rushed three levels this season. What I've heard is his stuff profiles as another back end of the rotation starter, but he could be useful in a year or two to take a turn every fifth day.
Wow, a lot of dough for him... but he went 2nd round because most thought he'd head to college rather than sign. I thought overall, he was the best pick this year... as he's a 1st round talent (according to scouting reports) that was picked up in the 2nd round.

That is why Vogelbach dropped and that is why many of us are really excited about the guy. Also the fact that he almost instantly has the most power potential of any Cubs prospect. Not so much a comment on Vogelbach's power, though it is pretty damn impressive for an 18 year old right now, but the lack of power hitters in the system. Vogelbach was such an anti-Wilken pick who tends to focus on middle infield athletes when drafting, and it is nice to see a number of guys with real power potential adding through the draft and international free agency.

I live in Texas, so I get to watch CJ quite often. If he can do what he's doing in Arlington... he can succeed in Wrigley. I've been hoping that he'd catch Hendry's eye for the past year or so.
