You're forgetting a lot of playoff appearances since that mark you set at 1917...

Cubs: 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938, 1945
BSox: 1918,

Not to mention that the Cubs actually threw the 1918 World Series...

Not sure where 1917 comes into play, but since 1901 (when the AL became major), you can also add:

Cubs: 1906, 1907, 1906, 1910,
BSox: 1903, 1904, 1912, 1915, 1916,

Still Boston holds a wide enough margin though.

I would go back to 1870, but that'd be unfair as Boston didn't exist then, but for the record...
Cubs:
National Association of Base Ball Players: 1870
National Association of Professional Base Ball Players: None
National League: 1876, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1885, 1886,

I set it at the last Red Sox title. Since we were comparing droughts. But when I was doing the Cubs I only did it past 1945 for some reason.

Sounds like Theo will be the guy.. Reports of him not wanting a promotion to Sawx team president seem to be pushing the Cubs option closer.

The White Sox won in 1917

Cubs ask permission to speak to Epstein - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Globe colleague Dan Shaughnessy has learned from a team source that the Chicago Cubs have asked the Red Sox for permission to speak with Theo Epstein regarding a position in their organization.

According to Shaughnessy, there were meetings at Fenway Park this afternoon regarding the team's response to the request.

Because Epstein is under contract, the Red Sox would have the right to refuse such a request. They could grant it with the condition that some sort of compensation be made in exchange for hiring Epstein. Or Epstein could decline the interest.

Epstein is two months away from the ninth anniversary of his hiring as general manager of the Sox. Only seven other active general managers have been with the same team longer. He turns 38 in December and could be seeking a new challenge within baseball.

Or he could be trying to leverage the interest from the Cubs into a new contract and/or more power with the Red Sox.

If Epstein were to leave the Red Sox, senior vice president and assistant general manager Ben Cherington would be a logical replacement. Cherington has been with the Red Sox since 1999 and was one of the team officials who replaced Epstein during his three-month departure in 2005.

Cherington was a participant in the meeting on Friday that led to Terry Francona’s departure, a sign of his stature within the organization.

More to come on this in the Globe tomorrow and on Boston.com later on today.

Winning the World Series is all that matters. Making the postseason means nothing without holding the Commissioner's Trophy at the end of October.

many would disagree

of course the ultimate goal is winning the world series and that is indisputable

LOL at people still beating the "Cubs threw the 1918 WS" drum. Every series back then was crooked as all hell. 1918 wasn't special. Quit trying to rationalizing shaving 10 more years off the Cubs drought.

Boston sucked until Theo took over. Sure they made the playoffs a few times, but so did the Cubs. They were on par until around 2002-03.

That's not even close to being true. The Cubs made some playoffs but the issue is that between the Cubs playoff appearances they were usually dreadful and many of their playoff seasons came out of nowhere or after (near)last place finishes. This is more usually the case post 1938ish,. Even when Boston wasn't making the playoffs(which they still did at a much higher rate than the Cubs) they were at least consistantly challeneging for divisions and pennents. The Impossible Dream season of 1967 for Boston is basically every Cubs playoff appearance story from 1938 until the 2nd Lou Pinella season.

Boston fans are the biggest douches, second only to New York fans and the gap is closing. Chicago isn't anywhere close to the smug, arrogant pricks in the northeast.

Not watch the Bartman special I take it?

I think in any fan base you're going to find smug, arrogant pricks. The level of smugness/arrogance is a matter of subjectivity

Watched it and thought it was very insightful. Still, the handful of Cubs fans who acted violently and foolishly in that situation still doesn't compare to the arrogance and douchebaggery that Boston and NY fans consistently display.

Better history? The Sox didn't win for 86 years. Lol
LOL at this. The Cubs haven't won in 103. By what measure do the Cubs have a better history than the Red Sox? Even in the in between of the Red Sox 86 years they were overall a much better team than the Cubs have been during their drought.

Both are truly historical franchises but replaying with "The Red Sox didn't win for 86 years!" as a defense for the Red Sox not having a better history when the Cubs haven't won for 103 years now is ridiculously stupid.

Better fans? Boston fans are obnoxious pricks. Negative. Lol

Irony here at it's finest at the end of this post.

Handful? The entire bleacher section and half the stadium was chanting "asshole" at the guy, he was getting death threats and they had to hold a spectacle where they blew up the baseball. LOL at "handful" of Cubs fans when referring to the fans who were pissed at Bartman.

Serious question: How old are you? If you were over the age of 15 at the time of the Bartman incident I don't think there is anyway you can say it was only a "handful of fans".

Boston fans> Cubs fans.
