Talk that they will now deal away one of their back end starters like bucholtz

Wouldn't surprise me but I'm just not sure Buchholtz returns much unless they just want some flier prospects to dump salary. But if they were going to just dump salary I think they could have not exercised his option. Eduardo Rodriguez is mildly intriguing. Henry Owens was a former top 100 prospect. Not sure any of those guys gets a proven 3B though.

Devers is closer than you think. He'll play AA this year and Boston usually calls up its guys from AA and then sends them down to AAA if they don't stick. Not a lot of teams do that these days but they do. I think the Yankees do as well. I think they'll try Sandoval at 3B this year but you would think their will have to be a backup plan. It could be Brock Holt who has played there before. The Sox are also considered the front runner for Mitch Moreland who would push Ramirez to full time DH making Sandoval's comeback at 3B really critical.

I strongly doubt boston is done. Interestingly, they dealt away both Shaw and Moncada who would presumably both be names to consider for their 3B. They still have Sandoval and Holt but that's not very inspiring. They already have $172.8 mil committed to 2017 with another $26.6 in likely arbitration costs. With the luxury tax being roughly $190 mil if memory serves, they might need to look to trades. Sandoval makes $17.6 mil but it would surprise me if they can move him for anything useful given he's owed another $54.8 mil and hasn't been close to that value. Buchholz is set to make $13.5 mil. They could probably move him in this market.

There's a case to be made the cubs might shop Candelario to them. Devers is at least 2 years away and given Dumbrowski's MO who knows if he even remains with the sox long term if they develop some other need. Only 3Bs ranked higher than Candelario right now on mlb.com are Devers(A+), Matt Chapman(AAA), and Nick Senzel(A) and i'm dubious on Oakland trading Chapman given they need a 3B too. Other potential options, Rangers with Gallo(?), Rays with Longoria though would they trade in division?, Royals with Moustakas near FA, white sox with Frazier though if they were going to get him surely they would have made a bigger package with the Sale trade no? Those are the teams that come to mind.

Red Sox could also use some C help and maybe a DH though if Sandoval stays and isn't their 3B surely he DH's. Rotation looks great and their bullpen should be strong too.

Apparently Sandoval has been on his weight loss deal again and is unrecognizable.

Bucholtz looks to be a classic change of scenery guy. He needs a change. I seriously hope he doesn't land here though. He's one of Theo and Jed's boys and they've explored trading for him in the past.

Devers just turned 20. And while he was promising in A+ he only hit .282/.335/.443. It would surprise me if he was ready before 2019 other than say a cup of coffee call up. And keep in mind we're talking about a team clearly selling out to win the WS in the next year with the moves they have made from Kimbrel, Thornberg, Pomeranz, Price and now Sale. Counting on a prospect would be super risky. Not having a back up plan for Sandoval would also be super risky. Holt is a bench guy with a career 92 wRC+. Also for what it's worth, Sandoval has been TERRIBLE defensively at 3B. IN 2015 he was a -21.9 UZR/150 and only played 11 innings there in 2016 presumably because they thought he was that bad.

Not saying the red sox will move to get Longoria or anything but trading for Candelario or someone like him makes sense. I think you could make a case that something like 2 of Henry Owens, Eduardo Rodriguez and Brian Johnson for a place holder average MLB 3B until Devers is ready doesn't hurt them in the slightest while insuring they have depth.

Also for what it's worth, I don't know if the cubs trade Candelario to the red sox but I feel like Henry Owens is exactly the type of move the cubs would make. He's only throwing 89 but he has a pretty good change up and a pretty good curve. Also shows a slider. On his career, he has a 21.1%/27.3% soft/hard contact rate. Sounds a lot like left handed Hendricks no? On the down side, his command doesn't appear as good as Hendricks. He had a 9.7 k/9 and a 4.3 bb/9 in the minors. Cubs have talked about having some young guys with options for depth. He strikes me as a interesting buy REALLY low option.

Sources: There is an increasing expectation among interested teams that the Royals will trade Wade Davis -- and it could happen soon.

Earlier today they were talking on the radio about Soler plus prospects for Davis. Would be pissed if it cost that much.

I'd think it would be Davis and a SP prospect
I doubt Hoyer and Epstein would trade Soler for just a 1 yr rental...

KC does have a number of interesting arms in the AAA area. Matt Strahm, Kyle Zimmer, Alec Mills, and Jake Junis are all in AAA/MLB range. Scott Blewett, Corey Ray, Pedro Fernandez, Eric Skoglund, Foster Griffin, and Garrett Davila are also guys i wouldn't mind having.

If it was Davis and Zimmer then I have no issues with Soler sent over. Zimmer is their #5 prospect so I'm thinking Candelero or Zag as a high point. Low point Dweese or DJ. If they want pitching Underwood down to Stinnett would be fair.

I would put Zimmer into MR with Grimm. Let him get his feet under himself. Cut down to 3 pitches and ease into the league.

I still think they need to keep Montgomery as the 4 but Zimmer easing into taking over for Lackey makes this deal must do.

On Owens. Maybe. I wouldn't mind them back filling starting pitching depth and see what pans out. They did this with Vogy to get Montgomery and it seems to be the way to go.

The Cubs are close to a trade that would land Royals closer Wade Davis, Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan tweets.

**** me. I know this should excite me but it doesn't. Really wanted a young guy to develop.

Again, have to think their getting a minor league pitcher included with Davis.. Doubt they trade Soler with his potential and contract, and especially if other teams were interested for a 1 yr rental..

@Joelsherman1: Hear Wilson Ramos has a 2-yr offer from #Rays and could be close to a decision

This would end any Montero scenario..
Though I think the Cubs prefer keeping him..
I heard earlier they were considering a 3rd catcher as Federowicz is supposed to be signing with another team..I think it was the tigers..

@JeffPassan: There could be a snag in the Wade Davis-to-the-Cubs deal, according to a source. Never was done and far from a certain thing at this point.

Why I never get excited about deals till its actually a deal..

Like the Bats were getting Sale last night

I guess we'll see the end of this but why not go after Miller if you wanted controllable closer? Maybe add a Boone Logan in the bullpen from the left side and roll out

Davis
Edwards
Strop
Grimm
Rondon
Logan (LH)
Duensing (LH)
Long guy (Johnson/Zas)

That's a fine bullpen.
