No, not at all. I'm just not a "pop music" guy in general, just not my thing. There's plenty of "low brow" music I thoroughly enjoy, but I still think certain bands are glorified for the wrong reasons. For example: I love the Beatles music, they wrote some fucking great tunes, but I don't ascribe to the notion that they were particularly groundbreaking in any way as some people tend to claim.

I just think that over-production does a disservice to both musicians and the listening public equally. I want a group to be able to recreate their sound live without having to play along with a recording (unless that's obviously their shtick [NIN, for example, had much more live components than one would expect, but it was obvious that a large portion of their shows would necessarily be pre-recorded]).

I guess it's partially a side effect of my education. Spending a decade studying "classical" music just seems to breed a bit of contempt for non-musicians making "music" and becoming popular for no discernible reason (outside of marketing). As long as someone has actual talent and isn't just a creation of media and a savvy producer I generally don't have an issue with them. Of course, that doesn't mean I'll like their music aesthetically.

But do you like the RZA?

Eh, I've always loved her version, but I can't say it's the "only" version I'll ever need. I love the Animals' iteration simply because Alan Price was a fucking stud (and being an organist/pianist it thusly holds a special place in the cockles of my heart).

I love the animals but their version of it is boring to me

I just love the organ part. That and Burdon sings within my range, so I get to belt out some terrible vocals while playing it. :cum:

Ran across this great cover by Daryl Hall and Todd Rungren of the Delfonics example of Philly Soul. Check out the other songs recoreded at Daryl Hall's house with famous artists

I saw Hall and Oates in concert a couple of months ago. The guy can still sing. I never knew it, but Daryl Hall is a very opinionated, outspoken, and funny guy. He was on Howard Stern recently and had me cracking up the entire time, talking about how he is on a crusade to kill all the deer in America because he almost died from a deer tick bite.

As much as I tell these punks to get off my lawn I do love when I find a kid on Youtube paying homage to musicians 25 years before they were even born.

Here is a great young guitarist doing Clapton's great version of Key to the Highway. He even throws in a little of his own swag.
