Matt Ryan. 5 yr/103M. 42M Guaranteed. I don't really have a dog in this fight, but for the sake of argument.

He has also made 3 pro bowls, led the Falcons to 4 playoff appearances...he signed that 5 year extension after he went to the pro bowl for the second and led the falcons to their third straight playoff appearance where they made the conference championship....wouldn't classify that as being unsuccessful

Aside from the contract, I remember we did an exercise a couple years ago in which we theorized which NFL teams would get rid of their current starting QB and start Jay Cutler if given the opportunity.

While his second contract with the Bears may be one of the worst... Giving him new paper when he still had 3 years on his first contract - when he hadn't even won a game for the team yet - was also semi-Special person.

So we're only cherry picking a single season from the contract?

You could certainly look up the Present Value of Money from the inception of the contract and do a comparison.

Stafford, Tannehill, Osweiler.

All of them could either lean back on "young potentially good/great QB", "past or present statistical success", "playoff success", something.
None of them leaned on "got out performed by HS gym teacher two months ago", 31 years old""

Let's talk about Tony Romo. How many QBs get a 6 year deal worth 108 million and 56 guaranteed with a 25 million dollar signing bonus at the AGE OF 33 AND 1 CAREER PLAYOFF WIN???

You can't be this dumb:

All of them could either lean back on "young potentially good/great QB", "past or present statistical success", "playoff success", something.
None of them leaned on "got out performed by HS gym teacher two months ago", 31 years old""

Cutler's outperformed Carson Wentz last season? No way!

Here's a dumb hypothetical for everyone. Cutler is slated to make $18.765M/yr over the next 4 seasons. If the Bears cut Cutler and then resigned him to a new contract that pays him $19M/yr over the next three seasons, would you be happy with this development since its the "going rate" for an "average" NFL QB?

No, because I don't want to settle for an aging average quarterback. It has nothing to do with the market price for an average NFL quarterback.

That's not a true "going rate", as many of the young QBs are still working off their non-market value rookie contracts. I would guess that the "going rate" for Mariota, Bortles, Winston & Luck would be more than $6M/year. If you think if/when Andrew Luck becomes a free agent some team is going to sign him to a 5yr/$30M contract, then that's ridiculous.

This is true, but it makes Cutler's contract look better, not worse, if we assume that guys like Bortles and Luck are on the verge of getting big money extensions, because it would drop Cutler's salary further down the list.

I would think the "going rate" of Fitzpatrick would indicate that Cutler won't be commanding $20M (or $21.7M if you look at his contract) on the open market.

Maybe......I think coaches get enamored with physical ability.....

To be fair, Cutler had his best season last year from a TD to INT ratio, average yards per pass, and QB rating. His completion percentage was second best this year as well.

While I think we have seen the lion share from Cutler, the staff may believe it is good enough. Also, I think Fox and Pace were told to start winning asap. I don't think they want to tank a season and hope for a better QB....

Like it or lump it.....Jay is probably here to stay.

Not really though because his production/potential doesn't match his value in actual money when compared to the list.

Cutler has made a career of getting out performed by guys making far less than him, ignoring cheap rookie deals. This isn't some isolated incident.

Relative to the average of the rest of the NFL, none of that is true.

Do you not have access to PFR?

Cool. No one said any different.

As I said earlier...

If the going rate for QB's of Cutler's ilk was so accepted Ryan Fitzpatrick would have been signed on the first day of free agency.

what modo said was pretty accurate, it was one of his best seasons...unfortunately you are right also, in relation to the rest of the NFL it was an average statistical season

I can't believe we've reached the point where the Cutler contract is ok with fans because Cutler has continued to suck/be average for coming up on half a decade and the rest of the NFL has improved and started handing out more money to younger QB's with more potential.

Would Bears fans be happy if tomorrow we cut Cutler and signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to a 1yr 18 million dollar deal?

Over the last two years:

Ryan Fitzpatrick
28 games
6,388 yards
48 TD's
23 INT's
90.6 Passer Rating

Jay Cutler
30 games
7471 yards
49TD's
29INT's
90.3 passer rating

Ryan Fitzpatrick has been consistently well below average. He's only had 1 season in his whole career with a Rate+ over 100. He couldn't even manage 100 Rate+ last season despite excellent protection and 2 great receivers to throw to.

Cutler is more similar to guys like Matt Stafford and Alex Smith, who both make about the same amount of money as him.

Except Stafford can at least claim two seasons that are easily better than Cutler and Alex Smith has been the QB of one of the better teams in football over the last half decade (49-21-1) and has had Rate+ numbers easily over 100 for the last five years. Smith is one of the most efficient and least turnover prone QB's in football.

Cutler's career Rate+ with the Bears is pretty similar to Fitzpatrick's since he's been a starter....so not sure what your point is.

Cutler Rate+ with the Bears: 99

Fitzpatrick as a starter: 95
