Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Dempster sweepstakes is currently down to the Braves, Nationals, and Cardinals.

I think the Nats are less likely to give up anything of substance than the Dodgers were, as they are the division leaders. The Braves might, but they are one of the current wild card leaders.

This was kind of predictable. Theo asking for alot for a rental when the teams know that there are more pitchers available. many of which are under team control. the market right now doesnt seem to be top specs for a rental, thats about all we know about the market.

I agree. I hold to the opinion that Dempster's trade value essentially died when he was placed on the DL, rather than traded, back in June. His trade value was at its peak then, as the only real SP trade options at the time were him and Garza. However, I wonder how much of this is posturing... a ploy to get the Cubs to allow Colletti to speak to Dempster about possibly extending him for another year or two prior to a trade.

Interesting... I'd think that if Colletti was going to trade for him, that this is something he'd prefer. At least a 1-year extension so he could have more control, and a potential compensation pick. Then again, if Dempster is asking for 2 years/$30M+, I might have to pass as well.

I think if it's closer to two years, $20MM, Dempster would be worth it. The age is an issue but I think the arm could hold up for a few more years and so could the production.

rosenthal said again on FOX that nats, braves and to a lesser extent the cardinals are all in for demp but also feel that giving up top specs is not worth it for a rental player. also notes that he is using his veto power which is hampering possible deals...only wants to pitch in the NL. So much for the reports that demp will "go anywhere and do anything for the cubs" again keep waiting this out and its gonna bite the cubs in the ass. as xfactor asked why? theres just part of it.

Also note these other teams are reportedly looking for players under control with more pitchers becoming available everyday.

I think the Cubs weren't going to trade Dempster just for the sake of trading anyway. If all the other teams are offering for the rental is crap (which is perfectly reasonable in my mind) then they might as well keep him and try to backup "get a pick" plan. I don't see anything wrong with that.

The Braves continue to be one of the teams courting the Cubs' Ryan Dempster. ESPN's Buster Olney wonders if Jair Jurrjens' poor outing today (six runs allowed, including two home runs, in 2 1/3 innings) will spur more talk between the Braves and Cubs (via Twitter).

Per Rosenthal:

Dempster's 2nd choice to the DOdgers has been the Braves, and the Braves would supposedly be willing to throw in better prospects if the Cubs threw in cash.

And Theo has been saying all along that he would throw more cash any teams way if it meant getting impact prospects. I kind of feel like KW might be in on Demp, it is all to quiet on the starting pitcher front for the Sox and although they don't have the prospects for the deal I bet Jerry wouldn't mind taking on the salary if it meant winning now. Plus Demp loves Chicago, he would just be on the other side of town

Except that you have to take into consideration that there is now an additional play off team, which is supposed to mean that more teams will be buyers, as more teams have a shot at the playoffs. If it will play out like that, we'll see. For the Cubs' sake, I hope it does, but there are really only two teams in the NL that have a shot that don't currently qualify for a playoff spot. So that's 7 teams as buyers. I don't care to look back, but that seems about right in previous years. Roughly half. I'm especially interested to see how this plays out.

I don't see why the Cubs wouldn't throw in money to get better prospects. Makes too much sense not to do it.

I think the White Sox would love to have Demp on the team -- but Theo's so hell-bent on upgrading the farm system -- idk...

I could see it happening since both FO are so tightlipped about things, but Kenny likes guys that are AL proven. But he just picked up Bretty Myers so perhaps that is overstated.

I think the Braves make a lot of sense given their pitching depth in the farm system and the fact that they want to make moves that don't cost them a ton of cash. I am kind of wondering if that might have been the problem with the Dodgers. The Cubs wanted to pay the salary to get better prospects and the Dodgers wanted to pick up the salary to give up lesser prospects.

when the zack lee stuff was thrown around (we dont know for sure if thats what was really asked for) but assume it is, yes theo has a hefty price tag. And demp is going about it right, play in the NL. Id love to have him too but it seems as though teams are swaying away due to the demand for specs as he probably would have been dealt by now if it wasnt for that.
