Yeah it is funny how the discussion on Ryan Dempster has changed in the past 10 months from being pissed off that Dempster exercised his player option to trying to get legitimate prospects.

I think Dempster has been worth his contract, including that option. That's why they're going to send all the money to get prospects back without even thinking about it twice.

Rosenthal is saying that Braves have only talked general scenarios about Dempster without getting real specific, but if a team fails to offer the Cubs what they want he says they can turn to another team like the Braves with their deep system.

No, I agree....I mean, if Verlander, Halladay, CC, someone who's considered a top 10 pitcher year in and out leads the league in ERA, it's not that big of a surprise...but, that list changes every year.

It's okay for him to be a good pitcher pitching great. Now is actually the perfect time to trade him. The Cubs will get a bigger haul for him now than they would've 2 months ago...That's all I'm getting at.

and i agree with everything you said.

From Goldstein:
Interesting: Source indicates Cubs are targeting pitching "that could be in Wrigley this year" from Dodgers - which leaves me confused.
If that means Stephen Fife is the centerpiece I am going to be very disappointed. If that means Nate Eovaldi is the centerpiece I will be very happy.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago White Sox
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Toledo Rockets
Dempster has been a pretty good starter his career (112 ERA+, excluding this year)but this year he has an ERA of 1.86, and an xFIP of 3.71 and a BABIP of .241.

Its not a knock to say he's pitching over his head and he's due to regress. Even if when October rolls around an his ERA matched his xFIP, 3.71 is a pretty solid number. But if in his next 12 starts (or whatever) he gives up enough runs to balloon his ERA from 1.86 to 3.71, that's going to be trouble regardless whom he pitches for.

So I hope the Cubs can sell him at max values before he starts to lose air in his tires.

Goldstein on 670 Score just said two really interesting things:
1. He said that Dempster is only going to play 11 games for a team and then resign with the Cubs. But said it isn't in their interest, but all industry sources say he is going to resign with the Cubs.
2. Said Dempster isn't worth Zach Lee, but did throw the name Nate Eovaldi out there.

Matt Garza:
Garza is the backup plan if Hamels/Greinke are finalized. Best scenario is neither hit the market, but if both hit the market they might keep Garza through the offseason.

With Demp - I'd be fine w/ resigning him in the offseason, as long as we didn't hear about his first half of 2012 all of 2013. He's not going to duplicate it in all likelihood...He's going to be a solid #3 pitcher.

With Garza - Yeah - we're gonna be much better off if Greinke/Hamels sign extensions...so, let's hope for that. :)

I think it is overplayed the Dempster will resign with the Cubs. This is what was said when they traded Ted Lilly and then he resigned with the Dodgers, but there seems to be a lot of chatter that Dempster is coming back.

I agree that the Dempster resigning thing is being way overblown.

He is 36 and you cannot tell me that he wants to baby sit the rebuilding Cubs when the Dodgers are contending every year.

I would pay it no mind except people who are credible reporters with legitimate sources keep saying this.

What about Dempster and LaHair for Zach Lee?

Loney sucks and the Giants are pulling away.

It doesn't seem like a package deal is in the works, and it seems like Lee is off the table. I would be more than happy to pull the trigger on that deal, but I doubt the Dodgers would do it as much as I might hope they would.

So talk is that the Dodgers and Cubs haven't found common ground and that other teams are being aggressive.

So are people pretty much expecting to see a deal get done before the game today and the team getting Dempster would want to get an extra start out of him?

That and the Cubs wanting to avoid risking an injury. Though it is a fascinating game of chicken we are watching.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal

Source: Dempster talks could "drag on a few more days." Scheduled to pitch for #Cubs tonight in St. Louis.

It is a fascinating game of chicken Theo and Jed are playing with Ned. Bruce Levine added this:
Dodgers continue hot pursuit of Dempster. Offer still on table. Hoping to get deal done ASAP.
