Gotta say Rice you are a pretty cool dude... for a Cubs fan :hi5:

I mean, seriously, what am I supposed to do? Dempster has his family to take care of and his 10/5 rights are intact. He can do whatever he wants no matter how much I curse him for being a turd and scream expletives at the stars. Hell yeah it's disappointing that he didn't just say "yes" and give us a Delgado-level prospect back, but that's his problem. And yes, it is the Cubs' problem too, and it trickles down to Cubs fans too, but hating the guy because he's doing what's best for himself when that doesn't involve genocide or something truly evil just doesn't bug me all that much. Of course I wish he'd GTFO, but there's nothing I can do about it and I intend to keep my blood pressure low

**** this, Dempster blew it... waiting till the deadline and we'll get nothing, and hurt Garza and Maholm's value as well.

I'm pretty sure that the Cubs are allowed to trade Garza and Maholm independently of Dempster if they so choose. Not to mention that a front office stocked with so many brainiacs should have various contingency plans in place, including retaining the pitchers. It'd be ideal if Dempster just went to ATL but I think the Cubs can multitask a bit.

I'm actually surprised at how well Maholm has done, remember his first couple starts he blew and I forgot about him, but I checked him out today while browsing for new fantasy pitchers and he has done surprisingly well

It's frustrating as hell... and honestly, it makes little sense if he's looking at the big picture for the remainder of his career. Sure, it'll separate him from his family... but you know... he's making enough money this year alone to rent an extremely comfortable place in one of the several extremely upscale and nice Atlanta suburbs and move them down there with him.

However, it is his decision... and he's supposedly mulling it over. You do have to respect that, whether you like it or not. It just goes to show, you can't trust Ryan Dempster if you're a FO type in the MLB.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. Dempster was the one who deferred money from his own contract so the Cubs could sign Xavier Nady  And I loved Nady as a college player (we went to Cal at the same time) but man was that a stupid signing.

I'm not. He's shown in the past he can be an extremely effective pitcher. He's also shown he can be terrible. Last year was good for him, but he did have shoulder issues near the end of the season. Hence why the Pirates passed on him, and the Cubs got him relatively cheap. Outside of his first two outings (which he didn't look ready to make coming out of ST, he was delayed due to illness in March), he's been excellent. I suspect he'll be traded, but the team does hold a relatively cheap option on him... and I wouldn't mind him sticking around for a while.

In hindsight, yes, Nady was a terrible signing. At the time, it looked like an OK deal. However, you mention that Dempster deferred money. That's true. In return for that, he also got Hendry to change the team option to a player option. It's an option that back in November looked like it was going to be a terrible deal for us, but it has worked out thus far. Now, if we can get him traded for something worthwhile...

Fully prepared to get Garrett Gould and another 15-20 prospect from the Dodgers now. And yes I will be pissed off at Dempster if that comes to pass whether it is fair or not.

Obviously Ryan Dempster has been thinking about himself and not the teams involved. It would benefit BOTH the Cubs and Braves if he accepts this deal. I've seen Braves fans on the MLB.com forums who are just as angry as us for this. If Dempster gets his wish, the Dodgers will be the only team to benefit and the Cubs will get the shit end of all this :obama:

Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs have re-engaged the Dodgers in talks, which goes along with my theory that they promised Dempster one more shot to get him to his clearly preferred destination. With an offer in tow from the Braves, the Cubs can say, "Can you match this?" or at least, "Can you even come close to matching this?" If that's the case, then maybe Demp goes to LA after all. The Cubs don't have a lot of leverage, but we don't know the whole story here. If Dempster said, "Give it one more effort for LA and if not, I'll take the trade to Atlanta." If that's the case, the Cubs have all the leverage they need. According to the AJC's David O'Brien, the deal is not dead with Atlanta, they have not pulled back their offer.
This kind of fits with Brett at BleacherNation's opinion on the situation in update 11 that I posted earlier. It is grasping a straws to stay positive about getting anything close to Delgado for Dempster, but I need something positive.

I really hope this is the case, and not what I previously posted.

I'd be prepared for Dempster to pitch tomorrow and maybe even stay as a Cub throughout the rest of the season, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he was on a plane by tomorrow morning with the Cubs doing a bullpen day with the Thursday off-day.

I think that it also benefits Dempster in the long run. If he goes to Atlanta and helps them secure one of the two WC spots (which they seem likely to do right now, nonetheless with his help), it'll boost his value going into the off season as a FA. It could also spur Atlanta to grant him a secured extension. If Atlanta makes it to the postseason, and he pitches well there... his value rises even more. I'm pretty certain that Hamels and Greinke will be extended. They reportedly have offers on the table that I would think are impossible to turn down. There's a small chance that the Tigers will extend Sanchez, and a slightly smaller chance that Washington will extend Jackson. If all four of these happen, there's a good chance that Dempster could be the top SP on the market this winter. Even if not, he's a top 5 certainly... and his performance with the Braves could put him over the top in comparison to some of the others.

If nothing else, he's had a good enough season thus far to warrant multiple, multi-year offers worth $10M+ per. So, it should be reasonably safe to make him a qualifying offer, then watch another team sign him... netting a comp pick.

I'm worried that teams will go after Anibal Sanchez, Zach Greinke and Cole Hamels over Dempster if Dempster costs a team their highest nonprotected pick.

is Zach Lee that much of a better prospect than Delgado?

Seen a lot of Braves fans hoping Dempster turns this down

I understand he wants to do what's best for him and his family and that he has veteran rights..

You're still making millions of dollars a year. If you're given the option of going to a team that you could go win with. You do it.
