Sam Fels at the Committed Indian sums it up nicely:
If you didn’t see our retweet of Bob MacKenzie, he had it that Saad was looking for six years at $6.5 million. Quite simply, that’s ludicrous. We’re talking about a player who has yet to put up a 30-goal season wanted 50% more per year than Max Pacioretty, who has two 35+ goal seasons. You simply cannot pay that.
6.5 AAV is gonzo. It's bonkers money.I wonder whether a 22-year old kid is going to regret this decision after a few years of wallowing in obscurity in Columbus, but I hope the money makes him happier than winning, because there's not going to be much of that going on in a podunk college town playing second fiddle to OSU. It sucks to lose a young franchise face like, but the more I look at this trade the more I like what the Hawks got in return and the options it gives them, including retaining Sharp. They were shaping up to be a top-heavy team in 2015-2016, but this trade restores a ton of depth enabling them to roll all four lines again next year, and that's worth a lot more than a single 50-point player.
