How many times does a player fly home during the season? Zero?

Why would a closer flight matter if he makes it twice a year?

Go tell that to Ohtani. Bring him home TL1961!

I had an interesting thought about part of the possible pitch to Ohtani. I'll start with saying I think he becomes a Dodger. I've pointed out the tax benefit to Ohtani for going with the Cubs versus the Dodgers or Giants. It's the same for the Blue Jays as income tax in Toronto is about the same as it is in California when you add both Federal and local taxes. Meaning if the Cubs offered Ohtani a 45M AAV deal the other 3 teams would have to offer him 53M to match the post tax income for him.

Then there's the team side to it when you consider how much revenue he'll bring in. That got me to thinking about the corporate taxes in the respective areas. California does have a slight advantage over Illinois qs their corporate tax rate is 9.75% versus Illinois' 10.5%. Toronto has a combined 53.3% corporate tax rate. So if each team were to offer the deals that would pay Ohtani the same post income tax money, the Cubs would start turning profit on revenue produced by him at about 75M while the Dodgers and Giants would start at 85M and the Blue Jays would have to wait until the 110M mark to break even.

How does this help the Cubs you might ask. A big thing in Japanese culture is to be a benefit to your employer and coworker. Ohtani would become that tangible benefit at a faster rate in Chicago than any of the other mentioned cities. And this is the same guy who lived with his parents who gave him an allowance to live on from his earnings while he was playing ball in Japan.

I still think Ohtani becomes a Dodger, but if he becomes a Cub, this could be part of the reason why.

Money and being a money maker for his organization isn’t what’s going to motivate ohtani’s decision.

Money and being a money maker for his organization isn’t what’s going to motivate ohtani’s decision.

I don't think it will be the #1 factor, but it will come into play, otherwise, he'd sign for 25M with whichever team he chooses. All of these things will come into play as they are interconnected. How much money he makes affects how much money the team can spend in other areas to improve the team via free agency and keeping players on the team. So it motivates his decision even if unconsciously. He's seen first hand what having players who can't stay healthy and are on large deals does to a team. How much money and when he becomes a profitable player also affects that. Understanding all of that as an organization and demonstrating to him that you understand it should be important.

My stance has been he winds up a Dodger. I think it's who he wanted back in 2018 but with no DH, the Dodgers weren't a real option for him. I'm just saying if I'm the Cubs, this is in my pitch to him. He wants to win and money is a big part of winning. Demonstrating that signing him doesn't change how you'd approach the rest of this offseason and offseasons to come should be big help.

Ohtani is going to choose where he wants to go. An extra 10 mill isnt going to sell him. Suzuki being on the team helps us cause they buds. Will that make his decision,no. But, it dont hurt. Im jut dreaming of a Steele, Ohtani, Wicks, Tallison, and Horton 2025 pitching staff. Whoa

I think , Ohtani considers weather as well as money, and he is well aware how cold it gets in Chicago in early spring. Pretty sure, Suzuki told him how disappointed he was with it when he first started here. . So, I think he will be looking to stay in california.

Two thoughts on this. If he signs with Toronto, the idea that weather affects his decision is almost laughable save for the fact that the stadium can be enclosed.
I was referring to the Cubs ballpark witch isn't closed, as many aren't..

I know. But still, the idea of he won't like the weather of the city for Chicago when Toronto is essentially the same. I get that Toronto has an enclosable stadium means he won;t have to play in the cold, but saying they cold otherwise makes a difference I find laughable.

According to Bob Nightingale (super reliable lol), Ohtani is NOT in Toronto and is home in Southern California
