The Cubs have signed Chris Coghlan to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). Coghlan, a Scott Boras client, will earn $800K if he makes the Major League roster and has another $250K of incentives built into his contract, Sherman reports. Coghlan can also opt out of his deal on June 15 if he is not in the Major Leagues at that time.

I actually like this signing. I thought about bringing him up around the time they traded for an OF. He hit .321/.390/.460 as a 24 year old rookie in 2009. That's almost surely an aberration as he hit .268/.335/.383, .230/.296/.368, .140/.212/.183, and .256/.318/.354 since then. The past 2 years he didn't get even 300 PAs which is part of the reason his numbers were down. I think he can hit .260-.270 with a .320-.330 OBP realistically with potential to possibly do more. It's not a big name signing but he's a decent depth option if Sweeney and Lake struggle. Plus, I think he can hit lead off which is something the cubs really need. Hopefully he or Sweeney could provide the cubs with what Dejesus did.

Cubs, Nate Schierholtz Avoid Arbitration
By Steve Adams [January 17 at 11:46am CST]
The Cubs and outfielder Nate Schierholtz have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year pact worth $5MM, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick (on Twitter). Schierholtz is represented by Damon Lapa and Scott Leventhal of All Bases Covered Sports Management.

Chicago picked Schierholtz up on an affordable one-year, $2.25MM contract last offseason after he was non-tendered by the Phillies (Philadelphia had acquired him in the Hunter Pence trade with San Francisco). The 29-year-old Schierholtz slashed .251/.301/.470 with career-bests in home runs (21), RBIs (68), runs (56) and plate appearances (503). As usual, most of his damage came against right-handed pitching, as can be seen in his .262/.300/.499 slash line against them. He received just 66 PAs against left-handers, clearly indicating his role as a platoon player.

The Cubs and Luis Valbuena have also avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year pact, tweets Sherman. Valbuena will earn $1.71MM after slashing .218/.331/.378 and setting a new career-best with 12 homers in 2013. He exceeded Swartz's projection by $210K.

Jeff Samardzija filed for $6.2MM while the Cubs countered at $4.4MM, tweets Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

That's the first time I have heard a fan bragging about a teams lack of debt and ability to make a profit.

Those medicals of his elbow have to be absolutely terrible for his market to be so bad that he couldn't do better with no draft pick compensation attached.

And I'm sure the fact he got absolutely clobbered when he went back to the AL didn't help much either. But I do agree that seems extremely low in AAV salary when you consider that he didn't have pick compensation attached to him.

or maybe some just over valued him way too much.
he not a top of rotation starter, he a ok 3, solid 4...
he gives you 6 IP/Game near 4 ERA and Avgs about 10 wins a Yr..
I said he"d be lucky to get 3Yrs 10-12 Per.. he got lucky with the Brewers getting 4/13Per.

I think you would be hard pressed to say that Shark was equal or better than Garza. That is what I take from your post

Sounds like one fan said that...

I'd say he's a weak 1, solid 2, excellent 3...

here's that gem about Edwin Jackson from another thread..

I don't care about playing favorites between Jim Hendry and Epstein/Hoyer. I don't care enough to talk politics. I don't care about how the Ricketts family operates their budget, or any other soap opera.

I'm just here to support my team the best I can.

When the Cubs handed out $50 million+ to Edwin Jackson after whiffing on Anibal Sanchez, fans complained. And now when the Cubs are holding tight on spending on free agents, fans still complain. Personally, I'm thrilled that we have a management team that won't give in to such a needy fan base. While I am a little disappointed that the Cubs have done nothing to shore up their infield (I'd hate to suffer through another season of Barney/Valbuena), but I also understand that it's a process. Let the baseball people do their thing. After thinking it through, I like the Wesley Wright signing. We needed another lefty to help out James Russell, or perhaps to build up Russell's trade value. While I like Zac Rosscup's raw arsenal, he issues too many walks at this point.

And the Cubs did not sign Edwin Jackson to such a big contract only to move him a year or two later. Get used to him. Players tend to struggle in their first year after signing a big contract (see Beltran, Pujols). Not only that, he's had to adjust to Wrigley moving from a pitcher's park in Washington, and I think he will. He's pitched effectively at the Cell and I expect a nice bounce back year form him.

I'd love to share some of your twenty-five dollar posts that shed tons of insight on the world of Chicago sports, but unfortunately, your contributions are limited to rubbing your dick on threads in the Cubs forum, cracking baseless jokes about Fisch's trolling habits, and posting emotes.

:dunno:
