wow! the negative remarks on garza. this is the guy that everyone thought would bring 10 top specs and now the same fans say he is a 3. love this forum!

You and I both know an overwhelming majority of the people who frequented the Cubs forum last year all felt the return on Garza was more than fair. He miscast as an "ace" because the Cubs' rotation was mediocre for his duration here. I'll say it one more time -- he's got the stuff to occasionally pitch as a #2, but his injury concerns and inconsistency away from pitchers' parks has him settle in as a #3.

I think you would be hard pressed to say that Shark was equal or better than Garza. That is what I take from your post

this just being samardzija 3rd full year as a starter, im going to wait and see how he bounces back after a rough 2nd half last year..
first year and first half last year were pretty good.. I always like to see how a player looks after 3 full seasons before I get a feel on how they will be..
I want to see if he can give another 200 IP with a better ERA and WHIP.. be nice too if he can keep his K/9 close to 9.0 again.

as far as the Garza comparison, yes he seems to be on the same path but like I said, I want to see how he does this year and if he can be consistent for the whole season.

wasn't me.. ive always felt he was no better then a 3.. Yes he had /has stuff that could dominate games at times but he was too inconsistence with it..

I actually think Edwin Jackson will have a bounce back year. Not bounce back as in 20 wins and 3:00 ERA bounce back. But I think he'll log 200+ innings, win 14 games, and have an ERA around 4.0. Shark won't ever develop into a bulldog #1 but I see no reason why he can't become a solid #3 on a championship team.

Cubs SHOULD have signed Garza for that price. He would have penciled in as the #3 guy and he is a very good middle of the rotation pitcher. And worst case, he becomes good trade bait again. He signed for a very favorable deal, and we apparently were willing to give a unknown $103 million more. Cubs are a mess right now. They keep coming up with more excuses as to why they don't spend

health issues asides he can be a number 2. His health is more recent than what we see in his career. Its like dempster...standing out amongst a bad rotation and the supposed amazing chicago pitcher rides the bull pen in the world series.

And bolded is the only reason why I can figure out that only one team was willing to give him 4 years at 13 million AAV. I would have liked him at that price, but it seems like 29 other teams were wary of giving Garza 4 years.

I think more like 29 other teams awaiting Tanaka and the Brewers smart enough to swoop in stealth like.

And when you throw in that there was no pick compensation attached to him, it's a bit disappointing there was no news of us going after him. Oh well, there are still some options out there that can help shore up the rotation. Interested to see how our internal back-end options play out. Kyle Hendricks is a name that intrigues me. Between him, Arrieta, Rusin and Villaneuva, we've got tons of options.

Garza wasn't just taking the first deal. This is the best he could do apparently and that says something about how the market values him is the only point I've raised.

Garza has certainly become well traveled in his career up to this point. I liked him when he was healthy here. I am guessing that is the main reason he isn't here now. Because the value of the deal is pretty strong if he gives you 120 plus starts over the contract.

•Baseball America's Matt Eddy reports (via Twitter) that the Cubs have inked first baseman Lars Anderson to a minor league deal. The former Red Sox top prospect spent 2013 in the White Sox organization but batted just .194/.302/.251 before being released.

Look at all those walks he took. .108 points higher in OBP then BA. Why Cubs love him lol

Not in one season...

Garza deal appears to be held up due to concerns about his elbow. Again as I said earlier those medicals have to be horrid with how little Garza got on the open market without compensation attached.
