just got the game. any suggestions, tips or hints?

I cant seem to get the "custom location" blue arrow to go away :(

For the blue arrow, just click on any blank space on the map and then click "remove it".

Tips:
1. Smith iron daggers and leather bracers and leather helmets to boost your Smithing skills. That means buying iron ingots, iron ore, leather and leather strips wherever you see them available. The quicker you get to Daedric armor and weapons, the better.

2. Get a soul trap spell, and constantly buy soul gems (empty or filled) and use them to enchant items, then sell them. Disenchant any items you don't think you'll use. If you find a soul trap dagger or sword, disenchant it and enchant a bow with soul trap so trapping souls is a little easier. Boosting your Enchanting skill is very beneficial.

3. I would use this Skyrim Alchemy Ingredients to do Alchemy stuff. Just input all the ingredients you find and it'll tell you which potions to make, instead of eating every ingredient you find.

4. If you walk into a dungeon and there's a Draugr that is just kicking your ass, there's no shame in sprinting the hell out of there and leaving. Just come back when you're stronger.

5. The Firebolt spell is useful early on. I think you can buy one from Farengar in Dragonsreach (you can also buy a soul trap from him)

6. If you have the coin, I'd use the carriage to find all the main cities, that way you can fast travel to them early in the game.

Yep, but I like how much more organized the quests are. Less important ones in the Miscellaneous section, important ones with their own quest line. And that quests page is light years better than Oblivion's.

Giants are terrifying at early levels. One hit and they'll send you flying in the air.

And there's no shame in dropping the difficulty level. I did it my first play-through just to get the feel of the game.

just got the game. any suggestions

Lock yourself in your bedroom/living room. Turn your cell phone off.

Buy tons of burritos and your beverage of choice. Get a heated blanket. Tell your friends you'll be sick for the next six weeks.

Pick up EVERYTHING you can during your lower levels so you can build up cash whenever you're leveling your enchanting/blacksmithing/alchemy. It makes things a bit easier down the road.

I'm thinking of getting this game for the PS3, but I've read that there's a ton of bugs for the PS3 version. Should I still get it?

The first two patches have really helped the game since launch. There is still some lag once your save file gets up around the 10 MB mark. They said they won't fix it this year, but is still a priority for future patches in early 2012. Games this big will have some bugs and glitches no matter what though, so I'd still buy it. Just watch some game play videos and make sure its the right game for you.

It's the game of the year, up to you...

That said, buy it for PC, then Xbox, if the choice is available...

It's really up to you. Those misc quests are usually "go kill this bandit leader", "go kill this dragon", "go discover this shout", "go fetch this item for me". Quests that will always be there and have no bearing on the story. Except for the "Join the Imperial Legion", "Join the Stormcloak Rebellion", and "Visit the College of Winterhold", those are important misc quests. But they're pretty short too so you could clear that section up in no time.

When I play and when I don't feel like tackling any of the main quests I go to the misc section and knock out 4 or 5 of those.

So is this game really that awesome? I've never been into the medieval/fantasy games so I'm wondering if it's worth the $60 for someone new to that genre of gaming.

That's the direction I went with my first time playing. I really don't think there's a wrong choice. I can see points both sides of the fight make.

1. Think Lord of the Rings meets Beowulf (viking, norse type setting).
2. Swords, Magic, Thievery.
3. Dragons.

A fully open-world role-playing game. You visit cities, barter with shopkeepers, receive quests from nearly anybody.
