this is kind of a pointless debate.

lets be real here for a minute and be a bit more simple.

Is "protection" overrated and over used by analysts and fans? yes

Does protection exist? yes to a degree it does just not as irrelevant as dabs makes it out to be and not as relevant as brett makes it out to be.

bringing mac into the conversation is also a bit foolish...different player, different league....hell mac could be the best player on baseball if he was on the angels...we just dont know. so lets focus on trout instead of bringing other players into this.

is trout good at baseball? yes. could he fall off? yes does the lineup have a sway in stats? yes. will he be pitched different on a lesser lineup? yes. this is a endless circle debate.

on a side note: give me the arms all day long. the only reason why the draft is "the best player" available is due to value. nothing more, nothing less.

13 pitchers were taken in the first round. so some value the best available, some value position due to need, some value pitching because of cost while some value pitching because of philosophy.

When it's close, the pitcher will always be taken with all else being equal

Although I completely agree with Dabs and Rubio and I think they provided enough evidence to prove Brett's point wrong, it all comes down to philosophy, do you feel your team is best suited to have a pitcher who will give you a good shot to be in position to win 30 games a year or do you want a guy who'll play in 162 but have a more minimal effect in the 162 games compared to the massive effect that the stud pitcher has in those 30. Personally I believe 162 games leaves more room for error compared to the almost perfection you would need from said pitcher and I would take Trout, does that make Brett wrong? No, but that's just the way he would build his team.
