The problem with trying to trade for 3B help is it's in one of 3 categories; on a team trying to get to the playoffs, on a level of control that will cost tons in prospects, or on an expiring deal.

It's not like the Cubs and Rays could swing a 3 team trade with St Louis where the Cubs wind up with Arenado and Goldschmidt, the Rays get Bellinger and Stroman, and the Cards get lots of prospects.

Rumors flying tonight on MLB Network that the Dodgers and Cardinals have discussed a trade involving Arenado.

At the same time, Bob Nightengale puts the odds of the Cards trading Arenado at 1%. I don't know why he thinks it is that low, given that their top prospect is a 3rd baseman currently killing them defensively in the OF.

I think they have to white flag it. You have to trade Stroman. I don’t want him to opt in for next season based on his recent performances. Use that money elsewhere. Bellinger could likely get this Dominguez guy from the Yankees. Cubs are also unlikely to add based on the luxury tax ramifications. The last thing they should do is nothing.

Hayden starting tonight in lieu of Smyly.

Haden is coming out of Iowa and 5 starts with a 1.35 ERA. So looks like he made a adjustment. Hope we see Last year version again

These are moves geared to win games.

Like I said I would not expect much at this point. Jed is making minor internal adjustments to win vs putting the team up for sale.

So I would take it as let the boys play approach. See what can be done internal.

Even if they do nothing it's not the worst scenario we can think of. Payroll still comes off at the end of the year they could choose to stay through an opt that's the players choice. And the younger players are learning this year with the vet stability so they can start taking over for the next generation. Overall status quo is really not the worst choice.

I feel like if the cubs aren't buying then they are by nature selling. I don't feel like they can stand pat with what they have so not buying is effectively choosing to sell.

The most getable 3B who's worth getting is Candelario from Washington. Switch hitter with solid D. He'd probably cost the Cubs Wisdom and Christian Hernandez and should be re-signable after the season.

OR the Cubs try to get super crazy, call up Tampa and offer them Belli and Stroman while at the same time calling up St Louis as saying, "We're talking to Tampa about getting 4 of their top 20, including a top 100 and we'll offer of 6 our top 30, also including a top 100, if you can convince Goldschmidt and Arenado to waive their NTCs and come to Chicago. Whadya say? You guys don't really have a history of bringing free agents in. You are at most giving us a 2 to 3 year window when you guys will be developing the next great Cardinal wave. Do you really want to listen to Brewers or Reds fans chirp about being the pride of the division?

Again, the 3 team trade is a crazy scenario that in no way do I expect to ever be more than that. But it is just crazy enough to make a click bait article.

Whoa - Mets agree to trade Max Scherzer to the Rangers.

I believe Scherzer has to OK it, and that may not yet have happened.

Any idea what the return for Scherzer is?
Not yet.

Texas is being aggressive, But Scherzer has looked bad at the end of the season the last couple years. But they've got a shot at taking their division and are being active.

They said the return on Max was Luisangel Acuna. Top 100 prospect. It was 1 for 1

Yep. Didn’t know Ronald had a brother in milb until tonight. MLB network ticker had him at #44.

Guess the action is starting to pick up.

Cards have a lot of guys who could move. They won’t trade 10 guys obviously but they have ten who could be the one to go.

I'm just gonna make one comment. I feel like we need to give the cubs front office more credit than they've gotten. It's easy to blast them for not spending like the mets/padres but let's be honest... look at where those teams are. That's not to say they are above criticism. But it's hard to imagine them blowing up a team and it going much better post baez/bryant/rizzo deadline. This team is far from a title contender but i think you could argue it's essentially as good as the team the preceded it and there's much more room to grow.

I don’t want them to be the Royals or A’s, but I won’t complain if they don’t spend like the Mets and Padres.

Makes you wonder if the Padres will by shopping Soto this offseason as they try to re-sign other players.

It's all about that happy medium.

On the one hand, spend money, hopefully wisely, and keep or get guys that will help the team. OTOH, they are the only team in the NL central that has deep pockets and sometimes you just want them to act like it. On the final hand, keep working to find and develop players to keep your own stream of quality coming on the cheap until it's time not to be cheap.

I would argue it's about flexibility. The issue with spending money is most teams aren't willing to cut their losses. So once you go in you go all in and it spirals out of control fast. When you avoid spending big money you can be more flexibile because if this year isn't the year so be it, you have flexibility to retool the next. And you're not mortgaging your future year to year in trades.
