He was on 60 day DL which doesn't take up a 40 man spot.
They had to activate him off 60 day DL today..
Why they designated him for reassignment

Opens up a roster spot now

I wish they would just get the damn catcher since they wont let Schwarber be that guy and Happ or Almora play more. Seems they are trying to bunch one in with a pitcher.
I was thinking same thing...
Seems like with every SP their interested in, there also a backup catcher from same team..

Kinda like their purposely trying to just add a catcher from team their looking at a SP from just to keep them together cause their familiar with each other..

But it doesn't. They have 40 guys on their 40 man roster already and Anderson isn't one of them.

Yea you're right...
You just had to burst my bubble, thinking a trade was coming tonight...[emoji58]
I found this little piece on it

Designating him for assignment instead of simply releasing him gives the Cubs 10 days to maybe trade him somewhere and pick up a lottery-ticket prospect,

Procedural note: Since Anderson was on the 60-day DL, this move does not open up a spot on the 40-man roster, since 60-day DL players do not count against the 40-man limit.

Someone has to take up the slack for Parade_Rain not doing his name sake.

Heard Cubs are talking with Marlins for Catcher AJ Ellis and Reliever AJ Ramos..

Both FA after this year, so rentals that wouldn't cost too much as far as prospects goes and they would both be a nice fit to team..

Ramos who closing for Marlins would be set up for Cubs...

Ellis would be a nice veteran catcher.. compared to could be like a Ross type with cubs

See what happens here........

So this is probably 6 months to a year off but Andrew Heaney made his first rehab start. I have to imagine the Angels will be sellers for awhile now. Other than trout they don't got much going for them and their farm system is a joke. Wouldn't shock me to see them consider moving him in the offseason or next trade deadline if he comes back well.

I would hope they would. Trout is best player in the last two decades and he works in obscurity. He sells tickets though so I wouldn't hold your breath. The other factor is how do you assign trade value to him?

IDK if they trade trout. But like I said I could see them moving Heaney for a big package.

So Jake got lined up with a catcher that probably will not be here and has a great game. If the cubs get a starter and lackee takes his glove and goes home, it can split the clubhouse. Really tricky situation going on here. One comment from last night though, if anyone in the central other than the cubs land Britton it could be a division changer. Nobody has made the move to keep up with the Q deal................yet.

Arrieta's FIP isn't pretty in July but he does have a 2.25 ERA in that timespan and has looked much better. I'm not worried about him being a 3. I am worried about Hendricks being a 4 but that's a different discussion and one where I think the answer is probably Verlander and shutting down Kyle the rest of the way. I'm OK with Lackey at 5.

No one in the Central is getting Britton. With a 4 game series against Arizona looming tonight the Cardinals should be full on sellers by Sunday. Lance Lynn should move and they should listen on Jed Gyorko although with the Yankees getting Frazier and the Red Sox trading for Nunez and calling up Devers that ship has probably sailed. The Brewers keep making deals on the fringes but they really risk their future in going aggressively for Gray which is why that won't happen and Britton doesn't make sense for them anyway. Pittsburgh almost never adds at the deadline and with such a narrow shot at the playoffs I don't see why they would start now.

You opened a can of worms here. Is this a slight against a SP that doesn't break 90 MPH? Because Lackey is sitting at 88 also.

Hendricks was throwing at 84-85 the other day. It's not so much his top end velo though. Hendricks lives and dies by the separation of his FB to change up and if you're throwing your FB at 84 and your change at 80 you're not going to fool anybody. I think he's hurt and has been all year. I hope he comes back strong and healthy next year and if I'm wrong and he can hit 88-89 then I hope he performs for us this year. Cleary when healthy Hendricks can pitch. I merely said Lackey is OK at 5 because the guy is a gamer. He has zero stuf but he gets by at times with guile and knowledge of pitching. No slight intended.

The Twins went out and got Jaime Garcia from Atlanta, lost four in a row, and are now sellers including Garcia.

I sorta like the fact the cubs are looking at guys like Seth Lugo. Whether you like him in particular or not he's an outside the box candidate and the cubs have done very very well with those types albeit older outside the box guys like Arrieta/Feldman/Maholm/Hammel....etc.

Mets are not dealing him. Wouldn't give up much for him either.

That was just 1 game though. You need a body of work to make a decision on vs 1 game. At Tenn he was near perfect so take it for what it is worth.
