1) He signs for LESS than the amount the Hawks offered and LESS than the $2.75M won in arbitration.

2) That wherever he signs and if it's a team that comes to Chicago this coming season, we all boo the hell out of him. Standing ovation of boos would be in order. This guy gave the finger to Hawks fans and Chicago and I'm ticked. He's no longer welcome in Hawk town.
He is very welcome here in Chicago. I will cheer the **** out of him when he returns.

I hope he winds up in Washington. Not that I wish him any ill will, but I would love to see how he performs with a shitty D corps.

Hendry's signed? Did I miss this? Move Kopecky and you're back at 20...and you'd need to fill a forward spot. Who's challenged here?
For fucks sake.

Hendry was not qualified as an RFA. He's now a UFA. This was most likely done to get Hendry at a lower contract. Bowman has been quoted as saying the Hawks will sign him(Big hint for you-there's a thread about it on this board). It was posted on this board that Hendry was at the convention.

Although it does not matter any more, a move of Kopecky at 1.2 and bringing in another forward at 600K brings the roster to 21.

Challenged? Coming from the poster that...

1) Thought trading Keith for Phanuef was a good idea.

2) Believed Green was more deserving of the Norris than Keith.

3) Wanted to have Kovie on the Hawks at the trade deadline.

His daddies penis. What are you trying to get at? The Hawks HAD to move him, if you recall. There was this expansion draft, you see, happening. And the Hawks could only protect 1 goalie - either Belfour or Hasek, who had a whopping 25gms played - and had to expose the other. Belfour - a bit of a cult hero at the time, winning the Vezina and Calder trophy...and was nominated for the Hart as a rookie (unheard of at the time). So the Hawks decided to hang on to him and trade Hasek to Buffalo, instead of losing him for nothing and rec'd a goalie they could unprotect in the draft and a draft pick that turned out to be Eric Daze.

Belfour's Hawk career was pretty good as well - ranking among the team leaders in many goaltending categories. Belfour finished third among all Blackhawk goalies in games played (415) and wins (201) in both categories ranking behind Hall of Famers Tony Esposito and Glenn Hall. Belfour also ranks fourth in shutouts (30), and second in assists (17).

So...whats your point?

yes, a 36 year old UFA that allowed us to ice a better TEAM then we could have if Niemi was signed. Why does age really matter here? We have a better team on the ice with Turco because of the cap flexability, don't we all cheer for the same TEAM?

Niemi would be a 28 year old UFA going into the following season, you really think the Hawks wanted to play this game with Zito and Niemi again next offseason?

Am I the only one who does not want to be chasing aging veterans

for short term contracts? I guess in all honesty it does not really matter.

The fuckup of Niemi is now a done deal.

One year of Niemi at $2.75M? Or one year of Turco at $1.3M?

Niemi is not the "goalie of the future" -- he is a UFA after this year. We'd be chasing a new goalie next year either way.

Well, since Turco's save percentage was better than Niemi's - while appearing in 14 more games and facing 669 more shots in those 14gms - whats to say he shouldnt get 40+ wins....and around 10 shut outs?
Also, keep in mind that Turco had chopped liver in front of him, whereas Niemi had the Norris winner, the best shut down defensive pair, not to mention another outstanding defensive defenseman in Hammer. Turco was facing more high quality chances, but still had the better save percentage. Also, Niemi didnt' have to break a sweat in many of his shutouts.

Niemi, thank you for your service. You had a great half season and great playoff run. We will always be grateful. But we lost many good players for salary cap reasons, and you are one of many. And btw, your agent is a d-bag. Spread the word to your fellow Finns, including the guy who told you to hire Zito.

WHY do people keep saying that signing Turco leads to chasing goalies and signing Niemi doesnt??? Niemi would have gotten 1 YEAR from the Hawks, not 5 or 6. It's obvious, how is it that so many people are blind to the fact?

You can thank the Sharks for the start of losing Niemi and Zito/Niemi for the last part, he had a chance to sign and he or Zito wanted more money.

Whats hard to understand? Niemi is a UFA after this season, we are going to be in the same situation whether he is a Hawk for one year or Turco is a Hawk for one year.

I wish Niemi luck and hope he gets the contract he is looking for. Supposedly there are 4-5 teams pursuing him right now.

That said, he was too expensive to fit in the Hawks plans, that's just the way it goes. There was almost no chance he would be here beyond the one year, besides if we really wanted him back he will be on the market next off-season.

I'm not booing the guy. Are you going to boo Hammer because he signed an offer sheet and ended up getting more from the Hawks than they really wanted to pay? If not, then why boo Niemi?

I don't blame Niemi. He is a Cup-winning goalie and it's risky for him to sign any one-year deal at this point, or to sign for a lowball amount. Why isn't he entitled to get what he thinks he's worth, the same way Hammer -- and even Keith, Toews, and Kane -- did? Bottom line, the Hawks had only so much to pay him and Niemi wanted more. No reason to be bitter over that. I wouldn't have signed for $2MM if I were Niemi, either.

He just stuck it to the Chicago fans - sorry but he's gone in my book. I want nothing more to do with him.
