Niemi didnt give up any softies?
He did early on. But as the season and playoffs went on he seemed to keep getting better. Turco on the other hand seems to be an aging veteran who is losing his skills. So turco giving up softies is more of a concern to me. Hopefully he finds the magic again in his one and only year with the Hawks.

Scott won't play much IMO. I see him sitting in the press box on most nights as a healthy scratch. Scott = Koci

21 man roster with 650K in cap space can be done. Not necessarily recommended.

The leap to signing Niemi means bye to Sharp should only be done by those mathematically challenged.
Please help the mathmatically challenged here -

FORWARDS

Patrick Kane ($6.300m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)

Patrick Sharp ($3.900m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Tomas Kopecky ($1.200m)

Troy Brouwer ($1.025m) / Viktor Stalberg ($0.850m) / Jack Skille ($0.600m)

Bryan Bickell ($0.541m) / Jake Dowell ($0.525m) / Igor Makarov ($0.552m)

DEFENSEMEN

Brian Campbell ($7.142m) / Duncan Keith ($5.538m)

Brent Seabrook ($3.500m) / Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m)

John Scott ($0.512m)

GOALTENDERS

Corey Crawford ($0.800m) /Antti Niemi ($2.750m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $4,157,753

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)

(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)

SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $58,345,757; BONUSES: $65,000

CAP SPACE (19-man roster): $1,119,243

What 2 players were they going to be able to use to fill out the roster with 1.119million dollars - and no callups all year then, as well as might as well not even have a training camp - because no Beach, Lalonde, Leddy, Connelly.....or anyone making a half decent salary would have a chance. Prob not Crawford either, if they wanted to shave another 250K off the roster and put Toivonen in there.

But he has telekenisis! He made two teammates collide.

I swear I still laugh EVERYTIME I SEE THIS... the hit then Kopecky in Carcillo's grill.

On NBC or VERSUS whoever carried this game they didn't show Kopecky and Carcillo screaming at eachother from the benches.

Hendry's signed? Did I miss this? Move Kopecky and you're back at 20...and you'd need to fill a forward spot. Who's challenged here?

I have to wonder with how this whole goalie thing is playing out if Scotty is

only setting us for one last year of his involvement and then to hell with it all.

Well....let's see - DET hasn't over spent on a goalie since Hasek about 4 years ago (at 4mil) when he was 42 at the time and since then, they've spent a combined 2mil on both their goalies - won a cup, lost in the finals once.....

Being that Michael Leighton/Brian Boucher combo got Philly there last year, tells me that overpaying for a netminder isnt the wise move.

Scotty's not driving this. He's responding to events as they happen. Niemi is no longer a Blackhawk because he turned down the Blackhawks offer and went to arbitration.

I doubt he expected the Blackhawks to walk away from the offer. Zito had to know the Blackhawks history regarding arbitration. If you want to blame anyone, blame Zito.

Will be interesting to see where and for what Niemi signs now.

Please remind me where Hasek came from?

I'm hoping for 2 things now with Niemi

1) He signs for LESS than the amount the Hawks offered and LESS than the $2.75M won in arbitration.

2) That wherever he signs and if it's a team that comes to Chicago this coming season, we all boo the hell out of him. Standing ovation of boos would be in order. This guy gave the finger to Hawks fans and Chicago and I'm ticked. He's no longer welcome in Hawk town.

Are you two years old?

The guy helped us win the Stanley Cup. He is forever a Hawk and his name on the Cup proves such.

The Hawks now have approx $3,121,743 in cap space for -

1 forward and 2 Dmen (assuming Scott is the 13th forward /7th Dman)

This allows a competition for Beach, Makarov at forward - or Lalonde, Leddy or anyone else on defense - or the possibility to even bring in another cheap Vet to fill a Dman role. Hell - Owen Nolan, Bill Guerin, Modano are all still out there...and if needed/willing to sign an incentive-laden contract.

By not "stretching" the cap limit allows for alot more flexibility

All in all, I'm pretty content with how this all played out.

Niemi was cool under pressure, but Turco is a competent veteran.
