You ain't said nothin' but a WORD! Has any player EVER taken the Hawks to arbitration and remained with the club to tell tale of it? The writing was indeed basically on the wall.
Fucking steal, sorry it is. I hate to see Niemi go but this was a no brainer.
Agreed.

Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook, Campbell, Hjlaorkmalsdnfiuasbvson intact.

Turco in goal. This is still a strong team.

Drop the god damned puck already.
Lets say that Turco is stellar this coming season. After that he is more then likely gone

with who next in line? Crawf, Toivonen? Not a chance. So next year we go through this all over again playing for another starting goalie when we have a rookie goalie (who won the CUP) that has the long term potential to be like any of those you are discussing. Instead we are going to be chasing vets at the end of their careers.

Yep, nice moves by our back office and if the rumors of Niemi just becoming an UFA then this is an EPIC failure by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Right...and if the Hawks signed Niemi for that, then had to move Sharp...you'd be crying about that too.

What a steal to get Turco at 1.3mil (if thats the true cap hit). He's only 34...and obviously wants to be a Blackhawks - basically waiting to sign with them, for a CAP FRIENDLY HIT - something Niemi (or even Hjarllmarsson) didn't/wouldnt do.
TSN reports Turco's contract 1 year at 1.3 million.

 Holy shit! If that turns out to be the actual number then Fucking-A what a S-T-E-A-L even for an aging Turco who will likely only be here for a year. Period.

Now *that* is what you call helping the Hawks organization out AND helping yourself out potentially as the club tries to weather the storms of this most particularly fiscally stringent 2010-2011 season all the while trying to remain competitive. Smart moves by both parties.

A million things can happen before next year. Ok ok sure I FINALLY get to see Turco as much as I want, I know, my man crush, but next year is next year.
I dunno Dante, I like long term solutions to long term problems instead of scrambling for a decent goalie every year. As we've discussed privately great goalies rarely become FAs, Halak is the most recent exception and that was because Montreal developed two high quality goalies at the same time which is even more rare. The only time you see great goalies go to FA is when they are past their prime. Cam Ward and Ryan Miller will never see FA until they are past their primes and then they might be traded if anything because their names alone hold trade value.

In another thread someone said the goalie FAs next year will be, Giguere, Bryzgalov, Vokoun, and Anderson. The best pic out of them if Bryzgalov and even then I ain't giddy about him. Giguere lacks consistency, Vokoun would be great 10 years ago. Anderson I am predicted to be a one year wonder and Bryzgalov just seems like Nabokov lite.

There is a reason no one wanted Nabokov or no one has jumped and snapped up Turco. Sure Philly tried but if they REALLY wanted Turco they would have thrown more money at him.

Agreed. Huge steal and the botton line is that Turco was willing to give the Hawks the favorable cap hit and Niemi wasn't. I'll take this deal.

But maybe the Hawks think their long-term solution is already within the organization. Who knows. Maybe Crawford will work out. I simply am not sure at this point that Niemi will truly be a great long-term NHL goalie. He could be tremendous or he could bomb out as a rebound machine behind a D that doesn't clear the puck the way the Hawks' D did.

We'll see but I don't blame Stan for doing what he did.

How is signing Niemi to a one year deal a long term solution? That is what I'm failing to grasp, everyone that is SO upset about Niemi walking seems to forget that we would be in the EXACT same situation with Niemi after this year. Zito/Niemi wanted $4 million per, were you prepared to give Niemi a 3 or 4 year deal worth $15 or $16 million this offseason? I'm glad the Hawks weren't.

Hate to see this happen but Bowman adds another great move in my books for just 1.3 mil for Turco, whom we won't walk into the season wondering who will be the starter midway. Yes he is old but is proven. IF they offered Niemi 2.2 mil and didn't take it then. When Zito said on Sports radio 670 that Niemi whats to be a Hawk was bullshit. How much of a difference is it 2.2, 2.75. I am happy as shit we got Turco. I thought I would feel like shit if Niemi left. But I really don't. I can't wait for this season to start.

So is Antti Niemi Finnish for Dominik Hasek or Jeremy Roenick?

Crawford barely lost out to Niemi to be the backup last year, so its conceivable that he finally reaches his promise this year and becomes our long-term solution. Its within the range of possibilities.

Let's cross that bridge when we come to it, shall we?

Right...the stupid. They'd been at the cap, needing to fill the roster with 1 Dman and 1 forward - just to hit 20. Let me know how many teams travel with a roster of 20 for 82 games.

Only the Special person don't understand that....wait, thats not fair to retards. What do you think, they'd move Kopecky's 1.2mil to fill it with 800K - yeah, that 400K would've done wonders to fill 2 roster spots.

I'd rather try and fit him next year then let him walk away this year. If we can't get him next year at least we tried but if we just go with Turco next year we are still back to square one trying to find our goalie for the next 5-10 years. Hell to be completely honest, I'd rather pass on Turco and hand the reigns to Crawford and tell him sink or swim. And if he doesn't make at least we seen what he could do. I'm a bit radical when it comes to goalies, I like to take young ones and throw them to the wolves and see if they can handle it. Kinda like what Carolina did with Cam Ward or we did with Niemi.

So then give the keys to the car to Crawford and get him a cheap backup. Hell the kid deserves a shot at it just for the pure amount of loyalty he's shown the hawks for all the years he was the next in line only to be passed up by others.

BS.. it must have been a huge pain in the ass negotiating with Zito....and the hawks will be at the top of the Western Conference again...so had they signed Niemi..he'd likely have 40+ wins... around 10 shutouts.... ect..... so he'd be looking for a huge payday.. Zito knows this... .. see ya Niemi... sucks though.
