McD just proved over the weekend why the Cubs couldn't win with him there...if he can't keep his damn mouth shut!

A good goalie is lost and for what? not even a bag of pucks!
McDonough?

For 1.4 million less and a goalie that will fit this team perfectly who consequently had a better SV% facing 696 more shots.

I am SURE they attempted a sign and trade... any idiot would.
Agent Bill Zito said "there was no specific multi-year offer discussed" between #Blackhawks & Antti Niemi. GM Stan Bowman said there was.

about 1 hour ago via web .Antti Niemi's agent, Bill Zito, said 4 teams called right after #Blackhawks announced they were walking away from goalie. And later a 5th.

http://twitter.com/ChrisKuc
Teams may be calling, but what are they offering? And for what kind of role? Those are key questions in this whole thing.

Fact of the matter is, if he signs a deal for less than $2.5 million per year or signs on to be someone's backup, he's fucked himiself royally in this deal (if the rumors of the Hawks offering a multi-year deal at $2.2 million are correct). Sometimes a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.

We got in my opinion, and many others a comparable goalie in Turco... and possibly a few better skaters had we signed Niemi....

It sucks losing Niemi.. but its not like were icing 2 AHL goaltenders.

$1.3M/1yr for Turco > $2.75M/1yr for Niemi. With this move, they can sensibly fill out the roster. Sad to see Niemi go, but probably would be gone as a UFA next year in any event. I hope Niemi holds Zito's feet to the fire -- the fact that Niemi asked "Now what does this mean?" after the arbitration award speaks volumes. Zito had a professional obligation to make sure Niemi understood what all of the possible outcomes would be. The fact that he asked that question demonstrates Zito dragged Niemi along. Maybe Niemi was complicit and said "do what you think is best" but that's borderline malpractice not to have informed him what the possible consequences were going to be. For Niemi's sake, I hope he finds a new home in the league. Will be interesting to see how his career develops. Was he a flash in the pan or does he have staying power? Time will tell. With Turco between the pipes, it's too bad they didn't eliminate the trapezoid this offseason.

Exactly my thoughts. What a ******. Notice the very precise semantics in his quote, "specific" and "discussed"---lol. Yeah, I suppose there would be no "discussion" if you rejected shit out of hand huh Bill? This is Zito's version of tool-ish damage control. He's playing with fire here trying to mislead the public into believing the Hawks didn't offer Niemi a multi-year deal and that Stan flat-out lied about that.

With their hands tied, the Hawks made the best of a tough situation. They've now freed up some much needed cap space to secure another player (or two) for the roster.

I expect Turco to be energized and biting at the chomp to prove he's still a vital goalie - after being dumped - and expect him to have a good season. Win/win move by the team. The Hawks will get reliable to very good netminding this season and Turco can improve his UFA standing for next season.

"The understatement of my summer is how excited I am to be a part of this organization," said Turco, who is in St. Andrews, Scotland, on vacation with several friends. "I have played a long time and seen a lot of ups and downs in the NHL, been around some good teams and the last few years of not making the playoffs cemented my belief in how I work and what makes me tick, and that's to have an opportunity to win. That's what the Chicago Blackhawks, from top to bottom, are all about."

Quoted for truth, he will make the Bulin Wall in a contract year look like Bulin in a non-contract year!

 It's really great to read how outrageously happy he is about coming to the Hawks!

Here's another doozie of a quote:

"We were a little bit surprised [to get this opportunity]," said Turco, who was vacationing with friends in Scotland. "I said earlier about the desire to play for [the Blackhawks] before the playoffs even began. When they won, I assumed the opportunity was erased.

"I'm more than excited to help Chicago do what they want to do, which is [defend] the Stanley Cup. It's been almost a dream come true to play for an Original Six team, especially one with [the number of] Tony Esposito, who's from my hometown [Saul Ste. Marie, Ontario], up in the rafters. It's an amazing day for my family and me to become a Blackhawk."

There is no doubt he wants to win. He turned down almost 3 mil from Philly to sign for 1.3 mil in Chicago.

That's all that needs to be said.

Had Niemi signed the 2.2 which was reportedly offered a month ago he'd still be the goalie. He didn't, forced the Hawks hand, along with Wilson and Niemi loses.

It's a business.

That's always been his rep from what I recall!

Another plus is that the Hawks no longer have to worry about him standing on his goddamn head and making the Stars looks like worldbeaters when they play 'em next season, lol!

Great to hear this from him..its too bad not many of players in sports think like him. true testiment of a great person and player. This comment is a showing that he will give his 100% and then some to get to repeat. Zito is a liar and It seems like Niemi did not know what the hell was going on. Niemi from what I have seen during his interviews did not know much of how to answer questions and looked lost. I wonder if Zito pulled a power of attorney kind of shit on him to make as much as possible and back fired.

Despite all the changes over the summer, this is the most psyched I've been about about looking forward to a Hawks season in quite some time.

We have as good a chance to win the Cup this season as anyone, IMO.

The Hawks made the right decision to walk away. They can simply ice a better team with Turco @ $1.3m, which is a STEAL however you slice it. The signing of Niemi would have been very problematic for the Hawks. In the end it all goes down to what is best for the team. And those crying about why they didn't sign&trade, who says they didn't check to see if there would be any takers. It would have been a risky move, especially when they have a cheap vet waiting in the wings.

As I mentioned earlier, I think Niemi will get the short end of the stick in all of this. I am pretty sure that in his naivety he let Zito do all the talking and his hardball tactics backfired and he got his client out of a starting job on the reigning champs. And Niemi made it clear the he would have liked to stay in Chicago, too bad his greedy agent made it impossible by pricing him out. This is now the second (that I know of) time where Zito has been problematic with Chicago and I am sure they aren't too keen to do business with him.

Same with arbitration, it seems like sure fire way to get a ticket out of Chicago. I somehow like that mentality, if you aren't happy what we offer, then we don't want you. This is suitable especially now that the Hawks are relevant again and will be a top-tier club for years and a coveted place to play in.

Updated projected cap numbers and roster from Capgeek.

I like it. Room for Beach or Makarov to make the team and/or sign a vet forward (Guerin?) as well as add Hendry + one of the yewts from the Hogs on D.
