Bobby Valentine is/was a good manager. WTF.

I don't even remember the last time he managed. He was in Japan for a while after he left the Mets. He can probably do pretty well in Boston. I just think he'd be a fun interview.

That is why Dale gave it 24 hours before accepting as reported on ESPN. He wanted the Red Sox. They didn't want him. If it's Dale's choice he chooses the Red Sox. Tons more flexibility and talent year after year after year.

It doesnt necessaily mean that. He'd still probably weigh his offers even if he had one from the Red Sox.

In addition to the Cubs possibly outbidding the Red Sox, Sveum probably considered the other points listed above about how Boston is full of asshats. The team, not the town.

But maybe both. I didn't particularly like Boston the one time I was there, small sample size blah blah

I am not excited nor disappointed. I know practically nothing about this guy. I will just wait and see what he's got for us.

Why would he wanna manage a team that has good players and will sign more good players? Signing a 3 year contract during a 5 year project that may fail and require another 5 year project is every manager's dream.

Dale Sveum Comments

Coaching staff recruitment begins this afternoon
Still learning and will always be learning
Team will hustle on all plays and will be held accountable but if they hustle they won't be for their mistakes
(some reporters not obeying the intro rules - figures)
Down plays hatred between brewers and cubs
(looks uncomfortable wearing jersey. Did notcwear hat Theo placed in front of him )
Learned motivation from former managers
The past is the past. It's a new day when you take the field
(no talk on free agents - probably not appropriate)
Important to have fun in clubhouse and on field but winning makes it happen
Used 60 wins 60 loses cliche

Understands complaints about day games but no excuses or cop outs. Use it to our advantage
Likes saber as options not the rule though
Creating runs important
(Levine finally introduces self correctly)
Going to stress defense and running in spring training (drills daily)
All about attention to detail
Stressing fundamentals this year (sounds like twins baseball)

Play hard run hard
(his stress of this reminds me of the Fisk/sanders confrontation)
Conference over

I'm impressed

Muskat's blog has some good summaries from today. Among the items, no Robin Yount as bench coach as previously rumored.

I don't think they asked this during the actual conference, but in breakout sessions afterwards. Also, a Chicago media guy (probably Gordo) floated the Yount rumor earlier.

Hmmm. He would be an outstanding hitting coach in my eyes

This might never happen but I think with Jim Edmonds having recently retired they might give him a call. He might not be the best guy to work with though personality-wise, however there's no denying his HOF-caliber success as a player.

Hmmm. Edmonds would be good on defense and heart. I could see him as a bench coach

Jaramillo is expected to stay on, but that can change.

There's a good chance, Listache will saty on.

That's all we may know right now... Bruce Miles says a coaching staff will prolly not be finalize until after Thanksgiving.

Sveum definitely will not be an exciting listen in post game interviews, but he is saying all of the right things right now. Love the fact that he is preaching accountability, but we heard that from Quade. He talks the talk, let's see if he walks the walk.
