Re: Versteeg/Sweatt to TORONTO For Stalberg/DiDomenico/Parad

Well, the issue is, anticipation out on the ice isn't really something that can be taught, and it is even more difficult to teach to someone in their mid 20s. I mean, you can teach people positioning in a lot of situations, but anyone that has played knows that positioning is all situational. You can't teach someone to anticipate where the puck is going, where the forechecker is going, what the defenseman is doing, or, most importantly, where your teammates are going to be. Players really either have that...or they don't. I think Versteeg is in the don't have category. I mean, the guy is amazing with the puck, and there is NO doubting his talent. He is extremely skilled. That said, I find myself yelling at the TV when he has the puck, more than any other player I have ever watched over the last 10 years. His decisions are simply mind-boggling at times, and he makes the wrong decision far too often for my liking.[/quote]
Bingo.
When I say he wasn't a good team player I am talking about how no one seemed to be able to work with him. Not Toews, not Kane, not Sharp, nor Bolland. He was always a solo artist on the attack and his ability to help his line get a goal was sorely lacking because of this. He was a third liner 80% of the time. Did you guys all forget that? I can count on one hand how many times he teamed up with a linemate to assist on or score a great goal, usually because it was such a huge departure from the norm. That's not Bowman hockey and had more to do with him leaving than a salary that THEY caused with the offer letter fiasco (or conspiracy, depending on who you believe was really at fault).
