I never seen Jeanty play, just now watched a highlight reel. He is lightning fast but in those highlights he has gaping wide holes to run through. The thing that strikes me is how tiny the guy is, is this what we really want or need? I need some convincing they should use the 10th pick in the draft on someone so small.
I understand what you mean. Alot of people don't realize how much Jeanty's success has to do with the scheme and conference he played in. The league Boise State plays in, the Mountain West, most of the league is near the bottom of all college football in rushing defense. On top of that Boise had a dominant rushing scheme and good OLine play. Just look at the stats of Jeanty's backups. Though with much less carries, they too averaged 6-7 yards a carry.
That's not to say Jeanty isn't a great runningback. He is that also. But what makes him great is his ability to bounce off tackles. He is very difficult to wrap up and has a low center of gravity and great contact balance. He draws comparisons to Barry Sanders in that regard.
For me, the risk comes with how he is able to shed tackles from bigger and stronger DLineman. Personally,, I don't think he has the greatest vision or ability to run inside the tackles. I think he will run into far more players and could possibly be inconsistent down to down. But with that said, all it takes is for him bouncing off one or two tackles to make a long run. So to me his floor is being the type of guy that gets 2 yards every carry and out of nowhere bounces off a tackle and goes 70 yards for a TD. But his ceiling is that no he continues to be difficult to wrap up, DBs fear having to make a tackle on him, and that he goes on to be as good as Barry Sanders.
