You mean the one where they had a pro bowl qb and playoff team coming off 11-5 and 12-4 seasons ?
It was a favorable situation no doubt. Obviously the Bears aren't even close to a great environment like that. I'm sure Nagy would tell you that sitting Pat was still very instrumental in his developement. There are success stories starting or sitting. I'd rather see the kid hold the clipboard and learn. Right now Fields is the most important piece in Chicago. I want to give him the white glove treatment for awhile.

He should be given every opportunity to be the team's starter in training camp. I think it's dumb to preemptively sit him without even knowing how he will play. Russell Wilson and Dak Prescott are great examples of this. If the guy looks better than Dalton and Foles in training camp, why wouldn't you start him?

That being said, If he doesn't outperform the other two guys and ends up sitting, how likely do you think it is that the Bears will have a team good enough later in the year to where they don't even have to entertain the idea of replacing Dalton with Fields at some point? If they start the season 1-2 or 1-3, there's no way you don't see him on the field. I don't think Nagy has so much job security that he can withstand losing a bunch of games.
It really shouldn't have to do with him being better than Foles or Dalton though. I sure hope he is better day 1. What I want to avoid is his first experience in the NFL being him put under constant pressure where he develops bad habits because we couldn't protect him accordingly. At that point I rather Dalton and Foles get knocked around and let Fields learn in peace on the bench for a year.

The 2022 first round draft pick belongs to the Giants.
I was asleep during draft day 1. I also don't really worry about who the Chicago Bears, a professional sports franchise owned by people that have more money than I ever will, select in the draft like the vast majority of you whom I believe lose sleep over trivial shit like this.

but hey, Grimson said it was a bad idea. /snark

Probably, well maybe. I can't see Pace and Nagy not kicking the tires, especially if Dalton looks like, well, Andy Dalton out there. A lot will depend on preseason performance by both QBs.

If you put him out there behind Germain Ifedi and Charles Leno Jr. his career will be over before it even starts.

Thank god hes got 4.4 speed.

Will Lawrence sit? Will Wilson sit? Of course not. You don't go after QBs of this caliber to sit behind a mediocre, at best, 1 year rental vet.

I'm sure Dalton is thinking, "they lied to me, I'm not really QB1." If Dalton does start at the beginning of the season, I'd give it about 2 offensive series before the fans are loudly clamoring for Fields. Fields going to put more asses in the seats once you're allowed to put more asses in the seats.

If training camp goes on as normal and there is time to assess things, I don't see the Bears starting Dalton over Fields at any point.

If he's smart he'll use it to run to another city and franchise.

If hes smart hell work on the pocket awareness asap. Cause he has Tools.

There is no doubt he has elite tools. Hell, in terms of tools he blows out even Trevor Lawrence. Physically it is all there and then some, there is no questioning why the Bears traded up for him.

So why did he fall all the way to eleventh overall? Are the Jets and Jaguars just that stupid? ...Is Kyle Shanahan just clueless? Why didn't anyone else jump in front?

No clue, I didnt pay for ESPNs insider information to find out.

you know, perhaps he uses 'you know' too much when he talks, you know.

Why did Mitch go before Deshaun and Mahomes?

Its not out of the realm of possibility that Trey Lance, Wilson or even Lawrence dont live up to their draft position.

We'll have to wait and see

Huh? Are you saying Mitch had more tools and athleticism than those 2?
As a prospect? Oh yeah. What happened was both Mahomes and Watson put the work in to get better and had the mental acuity to play the pro game. Meanwhile Mitchell Trubisky peaked midway through the 2018 seaon and got steadily worse ever since.

He can 100% be better than mitch/foles now. That's not the issue, the issue is you don't want to stunt his growth by putting him out there before he knows he can take the ups and downs

Mental midget or not, this city destroys the psyche of athletes. I'd rather the fanbase not get to destroy a non finished product.

No need to put pressure on the kid on what should be a season we aren't very competitive, unless Arod is gone from the division.

If it was what would I do I'd sit him if the oline isn't fixed UNTIL the oline is fixed.
Problem is Pace and Nagy don't seem to realize there's a problem on offense other than Trubisky. So they get a mobile QB who can pass, of course they're going to start him, if not day 1 then it will be as soon as the other 2 prove they aren't going to win.

What's scary is if we start losing ....Pace and Nagy fear for their jobs and force Fields into playing

Exactly. If this QB is better than Trubisky in every way, and we already know Foles is worse than Trubisky it won't take long.

I agree; let him sit; get your offensive line sorted out one way or another (particularly at left tackle), and get more potent at wide receiver. The good thing about Justin Fields is you can now design an offense that isn't completely predicated on the first read being open, provided he has time to deliver the rock. Colin Cowherd called Mitchell a one-read QB, and a lot of people were upset by it at the time, but he called it correctly.
