Seabrook to Oilers?

11:09AM ET

Brent Seabrook | Blackhawks

Roger Millions of Rogers Sportsnet tweeted the following: "A source of mine close to the (Chicago Blackhawks) tells me they may be talking of trading Brent Seabrook ... perhaps to (the Edmonton Oilers). Really? C'mon"

The odds of such a deal happening are very, very slim. Seabrook has no desire to leave Chicago and the 'Hawks don't care to let him go. Both sides are in the process of hammering out a new contract.

Also, why would the Oilers want to make such a deal now? Set to become a restricted free agent this summer (if an extension isn't worked out), the 25-year-old defenseman hardly qualifies as a prospect.

Blackhawks should shop for "grit"

9:30AM ET

Chicago Blackhawks

Treading in 11th place in the West, the Chicago Blackhawks may not get the chance to defend their Stanley Cup Championship title if they don't buck up shortly.

As for why they've struggled, Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald argues the Blackhawks "are too soft and don't have enough players who play with an edge. The sandpaper guys who played with jam a year ago are all gone, and they haven't been replaced".

And with the trade deadline approaching, Sassone adds the 'Hawks need to add such a player if they want to bolster their chances at even reaching the postseason.

What about Jarkko Ruutu? The inexpensive 35-year-old winger has plenty of playoff experience and is one of the "jammier" options out there. The Ottawa Senators are actively shopping the unrestricted-free-agent-to-be, so the 'Hawks should be able to acquire him for very little.

John knows about as much as Jack.... Shit.

Lock seabs up for for 10 years. that puts his contract up 2 years before Keith, and I think that's about the length of his prime. Take the long term discount like keith did and lock him down. This team isn't the same without BOTH OF THEM. They work together, make each other better, and I believe in a couple more years will be common law married.

Jaekel... good for some LOL's.

If Vancouver sent an offer sheet to Seabrook and he accepted it, he would be just as big of a villain as Chris Chelios. IMO I hate Vancouver more than Detroit lately, I'd say they are our top rival at the moment. If Seabrook were to jump ship, I really doubt it would be there, hometown or not.

Just playing the flip side...if they did trade him to EDM, I wonder what the return would look like? I'm thinking it would be a Dman and a Forward

Smid, Foster, Gilbert?

Gagner, Cogliano? If the somehow stole P-Svensson or Eberle in the deal?

Again...I doubt he gets moved and I think its a negotiating tatic more than anything - maybe even testing the waters to see whats out there if they did think of moving him. But what the hell...what would be a fair trade or something that would be "acceptable"?

The problem i have with trading seabs is getting back enough value for him that isn't going to cost more than him in the future and put us right back in this mess.... so, no I don't think it can happen. Anyone we trade him for would have to be of the same star caliber, and then well... will eventually be looking for the same types of money.

I've always thought though, with the Hawks having Leddy, Lalonde, Olsen in the pipeline - they cant have all of them be top 4. With Keith, Campbell locked up long term...Hjarllmarson signed..one of the current top 4 will be moved.

I'm not sure they can pay him Keith money of 5.55...and have their top 4 dmen making 21.68mil

How about we let these guys prove themselves before "making room" for them. They sure as hell aren't ready for a top 4 role right now, so why do we "have" to move someone from the top 4?

Also, why can't we pay our top 4 d-men a total of $21.68 million? (Who knows if Seabs even gets as much as Keith)

Using Detroit as a model for success, their top 4 consists of $18.75 million. The Flyers top 4 consists of $18.69 million, and they pay their #5 d-man $3.2M.

I don't plan on going through every NHL team here, but I'm sure most of the better teams pay their top 4 somewhere around the $18-20 million range.

And...DET's top 4 consist of 2 really physical Dmen (Kronwall, Stuart)

Philly's are physical and have 2 that can generate offense and physical Dmen

Vancouver's is expensive as well, but have both physical and offensive

And...um....Toronto...(do they count, for anything?)

Most other groups - as a whole - are in the 20mil range at the highest...prob avg around 18 as a whole. (I skimmed the teams best I could).

Seabrook is the only Dman the Hawks have that hits. Keith, Leddy, Campbell....all don't hit. Hjarlmarsson has regressed so he's a non-hitter (26 on the year).

If moving Seabrook (and his 154hits) allows them to bring in 2 dmen that can hit - even if less individually, but more combined - does it make the Dgroup "tougher"?

You have two more that will be ready next year or the year after in Lalonde and Olsen. But this isn't the future and I agree with you.

Why not go through every team. It's that type of thorough work the board expects from you.

I'll help-Calgary will pay there top 4 about 18.2 million next year.

I thought CGY's top 4 of Boum (6.6) Reghr (4) Sarich (3.3) Giordano (4)..is just under 18 and they're rumored to may be moving Regehr (although I doubt if in the playoff picture).

Regardless...having 18mil is still 3-4 less to spend on a better 5-6 than what the Hawks were shuffling in/out at 500K

I just want to reiterate - I AM NOT A FAN OF MOVING SEABROOK - however, if it did/does happen, I would be curious of the return (and hope he'd go to a team other than Van, Det, SJ, etc)

I hope he signs a long term, for about 4.5 - 4.75mil...and alls well

If I'm the Edmonton GM, I would want some dialouge with Seabrook's agent to see what it takes to sign him. If he's not interested, why ship assets when he could be poached as a RFA this off season?
