Well that would certainly make for a hell of a draft next year then.

BaseballAmerica.com: Draft: Slots You Can Believe In

Let's check the slot recs again...

6: $3.25MM
43: $1.196MM
56: $911.7K
67: $769.6K
101: $471.9K
134: $343.2K
164: $257K
194: $192.5K
224: $148.6K
254: $138.8K
284: $129.6K
314: $125K

Given that you cannot use the money from one slot to bolster another if that pick is not signed, how much underslot can some of these go in order to ensure that the first four guys are signed for sure? They can go up to 5% over that total amount without coughing up draft picks but will have to pay an overage tax.

Also given that Almora can only make twice as much due to the hard slot when he's eligible again for the draft, but that's three years from now.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Fire
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Arizona Wildcats
the Cubs picked a guy from Gateway Community College.

Awesome.

My mom's house in Phoenix is literally 5 minutes down the road from Gateway

Weird that the Cubs take two guys out of college that ought to be able to sign for underslot when those tweets about Almora being focused on college came out. Doubt it is directly connected, but it is

Keep this in mind: With these "cheap" picks, teams could have $500K-$1M to spend on a post-10th rounder or even an earlier pick.

Baseball America‏@BaseballAmerica

Remember if you save $400,000 on 7-10th rounders you sign, you can spend that on earlier or later picks.

There is still 7 guys that were consider top 100 avaible on the board all being high school. So maybe this what Cubs thinking. They can pay one of these kids to stay out of college

I believe the rule is that you can spend 100K on every pick after the 10th round and if you go over that signing bonus counts against the signing bonus pool from the first 10 rounds. So I guess the Cubs could be saving cash for the later rounds, but I am starting to worry that Almora is going to want more than 5% over slot.

If they're saving cash, it's to give it to one of the early picks. You can't give an 11th round pick $2MM anymore and so they're not going to gamble that some highly regarded prospect is just going to give up college and a shot at $1MM plus three years down the line for $200K now.

To me it seems that the CBA is not doing its job. The wanted teams to take the best avaible player. Teams are taking worse players to make sure they can pay certain guys. How that help teams?

The top talent went pretty much where it should have, and taht is what they were trying to get. We won't know what the results of this is until a draft or two plus the signing period happens.

And to me the saving the cash seems to be that they think Almora will take more and or Blackburn.

Most guys (even Appel) will be forced to take their slot money. Guys in the third and fourth round generally don't make it to the majors and they pretty much know that. The third and fourth rounders are true third and fourth rounders instead of overslot guys this time around. They have literally no negotiating power. You can save $10K here or there and make sure you lock up your best picks.

There are alot of teams taking college seniors between 7-10 RDs so they have extra cash. Thats not teams taking the best talent. Do you see Appel signing with PIT? I sure dont. Reports are he wanted more then 6 mil and PIT has only 6.6 mil for first 10 RDS.

With their 11th Round pick, the Chicago Cubs select CF Rashad Crawford, a high schooler out of Georgia.

Hope he runs like Campana :troll:

So let him go back to college for a year and try to make $3MM more. Pittsburgh gets a comp pick next year.

Looks like the Cubs picked a high school CF. Rashad Crawford. Wonder if he has a college commitment.

Guys have been drafted in the top 10 rounds who may have been wondering if they would be drafted at all=no leverage/happy to play.

Again saying teams are not taking the best players avaible.

The only negotiating power the players have now is either 1. they have a college commitment they can fall back on or 2. they know they can squeeze a team up to 5% over slot. The ones not chosen fall in 1. because they know as long as they stay healthy they'll make millions down the road in three years when they're eligible again.
