21 SRs drafted in R10 (including a 23-yo 5'7" guy from a 6-44 D-II team by the Dodgers); 1 SR drafted in round 11.

CBA really messed with that draft this year

Here are the slot recs again:

6: $3.25MM Albert Almora
43: $1.196MM Pierce Johnson
56: $911.7K Paul Blackburn
67: $769.6K Duane Underwood
101: $471.9K Ryan McNeil
134: $343.2K Josh Conway
164: $257K Anthony Prieto
194: $192.5K Trey Lang
224: $148.6K Stephen Bruno
254: $138.8K Michael Heesch
284: $129.6K Chadd Krist
314: $125K Chad Martin

The last five guys today are supposed to be slotted at no more than $100K or else it breaks the budget.

Rashad Crawford
Justin Amlung
Bigan Rademacher
Corbin Hoffner
Carlos Escobar

From rounds 5 onward MLB.com has no scouting report nor video of the guys the Cubs chose. This suggests that they are relative no-names (even the round 11-15) and that most can be signed under slot. So you can reallocate some of the round 5-10 money towards Almora, the sandwich guys, and Underwood because those are the most impact guys. Basically I think you take that 5% overage and sign the rounds 5-10 guys first and then throw as much money as is available towards the first four picks or so. That's probably how they decided to game the system. I'm sure the owners wanted to save a bit of money too, but they also want to ensure that the money goes towards the best talent and most of the time you're not going to see an impact player lower than the fourth round anyway. That's what I think is going on.

"The 2012 MLB Draft will, down the road, be remembered as the first one in a brief, failed experiment."

Hopefully player union and MLB union get together and chance it back. If both agree to it then it can back to normal

Thats my point. They are making mid picks worthless now. How many times did teams find sleepers in this area? Now this is less likely to happen this draft.

Chicago Cubs‏@Cubs

Through the first two days, #Cubs have selected 11 pitchers (nine RHPs and two LHPs), one infielder, three outfielders and two catchers.

they said pitching would be number 1 goal.

Guys that would sign above slot are hardly sleepers. I think we will find out in a year or two what the real results of this are. This was the first run on it, and we will see the results.

Googling the names later on suggests that most of these picks were defensible because it actually sounds like the players have upside. I think even before the CBA people were allocating money due to signability (see: Tyler Colvin, Hayden Simpson) which was even more stupid. Now the teams are being encouraged (even forced) to spend their picks on guys who actually deserve first round money. That is good. The shitty later-round picks are annoying, but I'd rather they throw their money at Almora in the first round than at a Hayden Simpson, which is what happened before.

Geez I was just about to post this same article. It was an interesting article that really explained a lot though it said that the rules for the draft are in the CBA. I still can't find them in the CBA.

One of the immediate ramifications if they don't adjust draft philosophy (just based on the small sample of this year so far) is that the best players are going to get massive bonuses while the later "slot" rounds are going to be filler guys who'd be happy to sign for underslot because they have no leverage. Therefore the owners will ultimately save money, the best possible players continue to fill the minors, but the mid-tier guys may decide it's either not worth it to pursue baseball or just take the smaller bonus. It's bad for the mid-tier guys, but really really good for the elite prospects.

If Almora doesn't sign we get a Top 3 pick next year (likely) and an additional #7 overall pick.

Yeah I don't want to root for the Cubs not to sign Almora, but the thought is starting to creep in that perhaps the Cubs could have been better served picking Appel and playing hardball with him. What you won't sign for slot Appel? Okay we will just get 2 top 10 picks in what is likely to be a better draft next year.

Appel wasnt the best player on our board we took the best player plus easier sign ability

I wouldnt be shocked if Appel just sits out until next years draft it is worth it for him Almora not so much he will sign IMO.

Depends on how highly you think of Appel, he might not have been the best pitcher on some teams' boards. But I'm pretty sure Almora signs. He has very little incentive not to now.
