Cubs have six more games against Houston. If they can get within about five games before they meet again in a couple weeks (currently 8.5 back of the #1 pick with Houston holding the tiebreaker), they could potentially sneak into the #1 position. Then it'd be very interesting if they want to blow their money on Appel next year.

ok, from the jist of the thread I understand that you guys are in the hunt for #1 pick in the next draft. But, Who is the goal. Is there an absolute Gem of a prospect worth grabbing with the first pick? Who is the goal??

The goal is several fold. I can give you one of my standard responses...

As of now it's way too early to figure out who is the overall #1 selection. It's difficult to say that the overall #1 consensus player available in the draft is can't-miss. The point is that you want the top position so you can pick first and also secure the largest available pool of bonus money to spend on your picks. #2 isn't bad for this purpose because you'll likely still get a good player, but #1 is obviously better.

Miraculously, the Astros are also beating the Cardinals at the moment.

Rockies win :woot:

Astros still suck. They're going to get another half-game of cushion on the Cubs :(

The Astros have been eliminated from the division race, and are the first team to have an "E" next to their name in the standings. Still alive in the wild card, but I wouldn't hold my breath

If the Cubs lose tonight, they will get another game of cushion against the Rockies. They also gain a half-game on the Astros, but will still be 9.5 games back of the #1 pick because the Astros have turned sucking ass into a fine art.

Astros no longer winning, which is fine because the Giants need to gain some ground over the Dodgers :D
