ESPN.com's Keith Law previews the 2013 amateur draft class, suggesting it projects as one of the weakest in years. Mark Appel, the Pirates' first round selection in 2012, projects as a top talent for 2013 along with college right-hander Ryne Stanek.

The Cubs now have a four game cushion on the Rockies for the #2 pick, but Minnesota is actually holding the #3 pick at the moment, 2.5 games behind the Cubs. Naturally the Astros suck so much that the Cubs made up no ground

ok, from the jist of the thread I understand that you guys are in the hunt for #1 pick in the next draft. But, Who is the goal. Is there an absolute Gem of a prospect worth grabbing with the first pick? Who is the goal??

The goal, IMO, is more along the lines of the larger bonus pool than any actual targeted prospect.

Keith Law, the same guy that continues to look upon Vogelbach as a non prospect?

Yeah, that was my priority because right now other than Mark Appel and maybe one other college pitcher nobody really knows who the consensus best player available will be.

I like Vogelbach's power but if Rizzo locks down 1B then I can imagine Vogelbach becoming a trade chip for an AL team. Or maybe they just hold on to him because the DH in the NL might be inevitable :(

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly. However, he's still a topnotch prospect. Whether he has a real future with this particular team or not shouldn't matter. Guys get hurt... guys get traded.. guys move to other positions.

At least Minnesota is winning to put some space between them and the Cubs for #3 pick. I wonder if the Rockies loss today bumped them back into #3 territory though. Hmm.

Nope...still a half-game up on MIN if they hold on to win.

The Astros would have to go 3-30 the rest of the season to match the '03 Tigers.....that's still very, very possible

The Cubs have to go 0-for and they probably still wouldn't catch the Astros. That's how much Houston sucks. You have no idea how mad that makes me :D

Oh of course the Astros would be winning after the Cubs pull off a major comeback instead of when the Cubs lose. Assholes.

Astros lose. Cubs are pretty much out of the running for the #1 pick at this point

Go Giants!

Unless something crazy happens the Astros are about to be officially eliminated from postseason play.

Colorado and Minnesota leading their games. Astros tied *gasp*

Cubs can grab a cushion and potentially make up some ground.

We should at least get a top 3 pick. I am mostly hoping we don't have to lose 100 games to do it. That would be sad.

I think 100 losses is probably going to happen whether they get the pick or not

Man, I really hope not. The worst record Cubs have had since I've been a fan is 65-97 (2000). I wouldn't mind if we were 63-99 as long as we don't hit the triple digits haha

We have to win 12 out of the next 30 to avoid the triple digits. I think that we can do that. I just hope we get the number two pick.

Yeah, even our team right now should be able to achieve a record on par with that.
